Louisville Bats News Release

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - The Louisville Bats have been the beneficiaries of a walk-off home run twice this season. Tonight they were defeated 5-4 by the walk-off as the Indians scored five in the final two innings, capped off by a Tony Sanchez two-run home run.

It was a pitcher's duel through six innings, the only blemish being a Louisville run in the top of the sixth. Greg Reynolds hit a two out single, breaking up Indians' starter Kyle Waldrop's perfect game. Billy Hamilton followed with an RBI triple, his fourth of the season.

The Bats opened it up in the seventh, chasing Waldrop off the mound after a leadoff walk to Felix Perez, single to Mike Hessman and an RBI single to Neftali Soto. Erik Cordier came in for relief, giving up a RBI single to Denis Phipps and sacrifice fly RBI to Konrad Schmidt. Waldrop finished the game pitching six innings, giving up four hits, four runs while striking out eight and walking one.

Reynolds started the eighth after giving up only three hits in the previous six innings. Sean Marshall got the start for the Bats on an injury rehab appearance. He pitched a perfect first and gave way to Reynolds. Three straight singles by Indians' batters scored one and gave the Bats' bullpen time to get Jose Arredondo warm. Reynolds finished the night with 6.1 innings, six hits, giving up two runs and striking out two.

Arredondo (H, 4) walked the first two batters he faced, bringing in one run cutting the Bats lead down to two. Their defense, strong all night on the performance of Soto, turned a 6-4-3 double play ending the inning and potentially saving the game. Arredondo came back out in the ninth to get the five out save, but hit leadoff batter Brandon Inge with the third pitch. Manager Jim Riggleman wasted no time, pulling Arredondo and replacing him with Clay Hensley.

Hensley (BS, 1)(L, 0-1) gave up a single and walked a batter which loaded the bases with no outs. Jerry Sands grounded into a 5-3 double play that scored one, leaving a runner on second. That led to Sanchez hitting the third pitch he saw deep into the left field stands, ending the game and giving the Indians the 5-4 win. Ryan Reid (W, 3-0) pitched the final two innings for the Indians, giving up three hits and striking out three.

Defense was at a premium through the first five innings as the teams combined for two hits, both from Indians players. Soto and Indianapolis third baseman Jordy Mercer were in the middle of many defensive stops. Soto played a role in two double plays and assisted on three difficult ground balls. Mercer had three assists in the fifth.

No Bats player had more than one hit, run or RBI. Hamilton continued to struggle, going 1-for-4 with three strikeouts. Louisville did continue to light up the base paths, stealing two, one each by Perez and Phipps. Louisville and Indianapolis won't meet again until June 29th which will be at Victory Field in downtown Indianapolis, the sight of tonight's game.

Tomorrow night the Bats return home for game one of an eight-game home-stand, playing four against Gwinnett and four against Lehigh Valley. First pitch is at 6:35pm with the Bats' RHP Pedro Villarreal (0-1, 2.84) taking on the Braves' RHP Tim Corcoran (1-1, 3.21).
