TODAY'S GAME: After the Red Wings 2nd rain out in three days, Rochester will play their first doubleheader of the season today. First pitch of game one between the Wings and Paw Sox at McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket, R.I is scheduled for 12:05 p.m... The Paw Sox claimed a 5-4 victory in game 1 on Thursday on the strength of a 3-run, 5th inning that broke a 2-2 tie. David Ortiz, on a rehab stint with the Paw Sox, delivered an RBI single off Wings starter Kyle Gibson in that 5th inning rally. Since 2003, Rochester is 34-46 at McCoy Stadium and 77-84 overall vs. PAW.
-LET'S PLAY TWO : The Red Wings went 6-6 in six doubleheaders in 2012... They swept one DH (BUF) on 5/5/12, got swept in one (SYR) on 4/26/12 and split four twinbills... The last time these two teams played a DH was 7/5/11 at Frontier Field (Wings won game 1, 13-3; Paw Sox took game 2, 4-2)
TODAY'S GAME 1 STARTERS: Red Wings game 1 starter RHP Shairon Martis is no stranger to the Pawtucket Red Sox. In his IL career he is 2-0 with a 5.67 ERA (25 ER/39.2 IP) in 8 career starts against the Paw Sox. At McCoy Stadium, Martis is 0-0 with a 7.79 ERA (15 ER/17.1 IP) with four home runs allowed in 4 games started. His last start against the Red Sox came at McCoy Stadium on 9/5/10 with Syracuse... Martis set his career mark for strikeouts in a game against Pawtucket with 12 against the Paw Sox on 7/22/08 while a member of the Columbus Clippers... The Paw Sox will throw RHP Terry Doyle, who dominated the Wings in his first and only career start against them last season with Charlotte. On 5/28/12, Doyle tossed 7.1 no-hit innings against the Red Wings until Matt Carson's one-out double in the 8th. Doyle made 11 starts last season with the Knights in his rookie year at Triple-A going 6-3, 2.83 before signing with the Fukouka team in Japan... The Massachusetts native was selected by the Twins in the 2011 Rule 5 draft but struggled in Spring Training in 2012 and was returned to the White Sox organization.
GAME 2 STARTERS: RHP Virgil Vasquez will take the ball in game 2 for the Red Wings in seek of his second win of the season after allowing 4 solo home runs in 6 innings on Sunday vs. Buffalo. It was the 3rd time in his career he had allowed 4 homers in one game and first since 7/28/08 vs. PAW as a member of the Toledo Mud Hens... Vasquez went 37-23 in 84 IL starts (2007-10) with TOL, IND & DUR before spending the last two seasons pitching for Southern Maryland of the independent Atlantic League... Pawtucket's RHP Rubby De La Rosa was hit hard in his 1st career Triple-A start against LHV on Monday allowing 5 runs on 4 hits - including 2 HR - in 2.1 innings.
DYNAMIC DUO: Both OF Oswaldo Arcia and 1B Chris Colabello rank in the top 10 of the league in batting average (Arcia, .458; Colabello, .423), on-base % (Arcia, .536; Colabello, .500) and slugging % (Arcia, .917; Colabello, .808)... With Arcia and Colabello in the 3- and 4-holes of the Red Wings lineup, opposing pitchers have been able to keep both off the bases just six times in 26 trips through the heart of the Red Wings order. In nine of those trips, both Arcia and Colabello have reached base.
HITTIN' THE HOMER: With two more home runs on Thursday the Red Wings have now hit four in the last two games and are tied for the league lead with Syracuse and Gwinnett with 11 long balls on the season... The home run ball has accounted for all of the Wings' runs (6) the last two games and on the season, over half of Rochester's runs (17 of 33; 52%) have come via the home run.
-Last season, the Wings didn't hit their 11th HR of the season until the 31st game of the year (May 8).
-With Arcia's HR on Thursday the Wings now have two players with three HR's on the year (Colabello)... Last season, a Red Wings player didn't hit three home runs until Michael Hollimon hit his 3rd on May 26.
K-MEN - Red Wings pitchers combined to strike out 12 hitters Thursday for the second game in a row... The last time the Wings struck out 12 or more in back-to-back games was 7/27-7/28/08 vs. Scranton/WB. Francisco Liriano (9 K's) and Philip Humber (10 K's) were the starters in those games where the Wings combined for 26 punchouts... Since July, 2008, there had only been three other instances of consecutive double digit SO games by Rochester hurlers.
-The most strikeouts in back-to-back games by the Wings since the 26 from 7/27-7/28/08 was 28 on 8/5-8/6/12 when Rochester struck out 19 Mud Hens on 8/5 in a 19-inn. game and then struck out 9 the following night against SWB.
