Pawtucket Red Sox News Release

PAWTUCKET, R.I. -- The Pawtucket Red Sox continued the best start in franchise history by winning both ends of a doubleheader Saturday with the Rochester Red Wings by identical scores of 7-1 and 7-1.

Defending their 2012 Governor's Cup championship, the Sox have won eight of their first nine games this season, including their first three at home. On the way to Saturday's sweep, Pawtucket surrendered a total of just two runs on six hits.

In fact, the only hit for Rochester through the first six innings of the second contest was a home run by Chris Colabello, who grew up up in Milford, Mass. and attended nearby Assumption College. Colabello's big fly came off PawSox starter Rubby De La Rosa, who left after 50 pitches in 2 1/3 innings.

By the time Graham Godfrey relieved De La Rosa, the Sox had a 2-1 lead on a Mark Hamilton double and a sacrifice fly from Brock Holt. Godfrey (WP, 1-1) walked the first batter faced, before retiring the next 11 Red Wings, including five strikeouts, en route to the victory.

Pawtucket added to its lead on Jeremy Hazelbaker's fourth home run, a solo shot in the fourth inning. The Sox then put the game out of reach, as they did in the opener, with a productive sixth. Justin Henry drove in a run with his third hit of the contest, a single, and Hamlton brought three more runs home with his second double.

As noted, the PawSox broke out in the sixth inning of Game 1, unlocking a 1-1 tie and pulling away with six runs off relievers Anthony Slama (LP, 0-2) and Caleb Theilbar. They loaded the bases for the third straight inning with a walk and back-to-back bunt singles. Slama then walked in the go-ahead run on four pitches to Jose Iglesias.

Thielbar, a lefty, was summoned to face David Ortiz, who pulled a two-run single to right field for a 4-1 lead. Ryan Lavarnway followed with a sacrifice fly and Drew Sutton delivered a two-run double to complete the 10-batter inning.

Oscar Villareal (2-0) worked a scoreless inning in relief en route to the win, after Terry Doyle yielded just two hits in 5.0 innings. Doyle retired the final 10 batters and 13 of the last 14 he faced. Chris Carpenter ended the game with back-to-back strikeouts.

Afterthoughts: Ortiz is 3-for-8 with three RBI in two games with the PawSox...Doyle, a Rhode Island resident who graduated from Boston College, has allowed just one run on three hits in 11 1/3 innings of work...Carpenter has 12 strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings pitched...Drew Sutton collected three hits and two RBI and reached safely in five of six plate appearances in Saturday's doubleheader.
