Rochester Red Wings News Release
TUESDAY, JUNE 5, 2012 w FRONTIER FIELD
GAME #58 - HOME GAME #27 - 7:05 P.M.
NORFOLK TIDES (26-33) at ROCHESTER RED WINGS (25-32)
LHP ZACH BRITTON (NR) vs. LHP MATT MALONEY (0-1, 5.40)
NORFOLK TALES: The Rochester Red Wings tonight begin a 4-game series with Norfolk (Orioles), which is making its lone regular-season visit to Frontier Field. The Red Wings began the 8-game homestand by taking 3 of 4 from the 2-time defending International League Champion Columbus Clippers (Indians). Following 4 with Norfolk, the Wings will embark on their longest roadtrip of the season, a 9-day, 8-game adventure to Indianapolis (Pirates) and Louisville (Reds). Rochester has 4 other 8-game trips, but all are 8 days long.
ROSTER NEWS: The Red Wings yesterday placed right-handed pitcher David Bromberg on the 7-Day Disabled List with right shoulder tendinitis. The 24-year-old went 0-2 with a 5.40 ERA in 2 starts after being promoted from Double-A New Britain.
a Also yesterday, the Twins recalled righthander Nick Blackburn. The Red Wings' 25-man roster now stands at 24.
RIGHT SAID STEADY: The Red Wings are 11-9 in their last 20 games beginning May 15. Only Charlotte (14), Empire State (13), and Indianapolis (12) have more wins in that time.
a The Wings on Saturday began a stretch of playing 16 of 20 games through June 21 against teams with a current losing record. The lone exception is a 4-game series at Indianapolis beginning Saturday.
a Following the above-mentioned stretch, the Wings will play 17 straight games leading into the All-Star break against teams with a current winning record, including 5 against the IL North Division-leading Pawtucket Red Sox July 2-6.
WE CAN DO THIS: The Red Wings have won 2 in a row, 3 of their last 4, and 5 of their last 7. A win tonight would give the Red Wings their longest winning streak since a season-best 4-gamer May 3-5. That 4-game winning streak was the club's longest since a 5-game streak August 10-14, 2010 (streak started with the 2nd game of a doubleheader that August 10).
HOME BODIES: The Red Wings have won 10 of their last 14 at Frontier Field and are 19-15 along Morrie Silver Way overall, including a 15-11 mark as the home team. The Wings, meanwhile, are just 6-17 in true road games. The Rochester pitching staff has a 2.69 ERA (87 ER/291.0 IP) in 34 games at Frontier Field compared to a 4.98 ERA (106 ER/191.2 IP) in 23 games outside the Flower City.
a The Red Wings went 32-41 at Frontier Field in 2011, including one loss as the "road" team in a make-up game with Columbus.
a Rochester last had a winning record at Frontier Field when the 2008 club went 46-26.
MAKING THEIR PITCH: The Red Wings pitching staff allowed just 2 runs in the recently-compete series vs. Columbus, a 0.60 ERA (2 ER/30.0 IP) in that time. Rochester enters tonight ranked 7th in the league with a 3.60 ERA. The success comes on the heels of ranking last in the league in ERA in both of the last 2 seasons and 2nd to last in 2009.
a Since allowing 11 runs May 12 at Syracuse, Red Wings' pitchers have allowed 4 runs or less in 18 of 22 games. The exceptions in that time, though, include a season-high 13 runs (12 earned) May 25 at Gwinnett and 10 runs Wednesday at Charlotte.
a Red Wings' pitchers have also surrendered 4 runs or less in 15 straight games at Frontier Field, including 11 contests with one or no runs allowed.
KEEPING IT IN THE YARD: The Red Wings' pitching staff has gone 5 straight games without giving up a home run and has allowed only 2 in its last 10 games. Both homers came Wednesday at Charlotte (White Sox) off righthander Liam Hendriks. Including the final 7 innings of that game, Red Wings' pitchers have gone 46 consecutive innings without giving up a long ball.
a The Red Wings have gone 5 games in a row without giving up a homer for the first time since a 6-game streak August 21-26, 2010.
a Rochester hurlers have given up just 37 homers all season, tied for the 4th-lowest mark in the league with Louisville. Gwinnett (Braves) leads the circuit with only 31 homers allowed.
ONE AND NONE: The Red Wings have been held to one or no runs 14 times in 57 games (24.5 percent). That total includes 5 shutouts. The Red Wings rank last in the IL with 183 runs, 17 behind the next closest team Durham (Rays), which has 200. Pawtucket leads the league with 288 runs, 105 more than Rochester.
a Rochester outscored Columbus 9-2 in the recently-complete series.
EXTRA! EXTRA!: The Red Wings have recorded at least one extra-base hit in 31 consecutive games, their longest such streak in one season since July 31-September 5, 2009, when they had a 38-game streak.
a In the 2nd game of yesterday's doubleheader vs. Columbus, the Red Wings homered twice in one inning for the first time. Chris Parmelee and Wilkin Ramirez turned the trick in the 6th inning.
CALLING ALL STARS: Online voting for the 2012 Triple-A All-Star Game is underway. The game, featuring the International League and the Pacific Coast League, will be played July 11 at Buffalo's Coca-Cola Field. Fans can vote by visiting RedWingsBaseball.com and clicking on the "Fan Zone" tab.
a Leading Red Wings candidates include Anthony Slama, owner of 9 saves, a 0.40 ERA, and a 17.0 consecutive scoreless innings streak; and Matt Carson, who leads Rochester with a .290 average, 53 hits, 19 extra-base hits, 15 doubles, 17 RBI, 78 total bases, and 24 runs scored. Slama is tied for 4th in the league in saves while Carson is tied for 4th in doubles.
