Toledo Mud Hens News Release

It seemed like Groundhog's Day at Fifth Third Field as pitching dominated for the second night in a row at Fifth Third Field. And once again, late inning runs doomed the Hens as they fell 3-1 to Charlotte.

Both starting pitchers had relatively easy work in the first four innings, combining to allow just three hits. Walks were an issue though, as Brooks Brown walked four batters to Matt Zaleski's three.

The Hens brought home the first run of the game on a Ben Guez RBI double in the fourth. The Knights responded half an inning later with an RBI double of their own off the bat of Tyler Kuhn to tie the game, 1-1.

Charlotte broke the tie in the eighth with a sacrifice fly off the bat of Hector Gimenez. The Knights added another on a Ryan Raburn error later in the inning to make it 3-1. Luke Putkonen was responsible for both runs and charged with the loss.

Brooks Brown finished with a strong outing, allowing one run on three hits and striking out five through six innings.

The Hens face Charlotte again tomorrow in game two of their four game set. RHP Thad Weber will take the mound looking to repeat the 12-strikeout performance he had in his last start at Fifth Third. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Game Notes

Zachary Maggard went 0-for-3 and was called for a rare catcher's inference in his Triple-A debut.

Ben Guez went 2-3 with two doubles and the Hens only RBI.

Brad Eldred extended his hitting streak to ten games with a double in the eighth.
