Rochester Red Wings News Release

SATURDAY, JULY 28, 2012 w HUNTINGTON PARK

GAME #108 - ROAD GAME #54 - 7:05 P.M.

ROCHESTER RED WINGS (52-55) at COLUMBUS CLIPPERS (58-50)

RHP LIAM HENDRIKS (7-1, 1.84) vs. RHP JEANMAR GOMEZ (3-2, 3.15)

IN A BUCKEYE STATE OF MIND: The Rochester Red Wings tonight begin an 8-game roadtrip with the first game of a 4-game series at Columbus (Indians). Following the 4th of only 5 scheduled offdays Wednesday, the Red Wings will play a 4-game set at Toledo (Tigers). Rochester then returns home on August 6 for a 6-game stay at Frontier Field, the start of a stretch of playing 18 of their final 29 games at home.

a The Red Wings are in the midst of playing 16 of 20 games on the road, a stretch that started July 16.

ROSTER NEWS: The Minnesota Twins today recalled third baseman Danny Valencia from Triple-A Rochester. He takes the 25-man roster spot of infielder Trevor Plouffe, who was placed on the 15-Day Disabled List with a bruised right thumb.

a Valencia is the 18th player, the 6th position player, to be promoted to the Twins from Rochester. He batted .250 with 7 homers and 37 RBI in 69 games with the Red Wings after he was optioned from the Twins May 9. He leaves Rochester as the team's RBI leader despite joining the club more than a month into the season.

ALMOST THERE: A victory tonight at Columbus would give the Red Wings 53 to match their win total from all of last year. The 2011 club went 53-91 and it was 23 games under .500 at 42-65 at this point last season. The 2010 team was 29 games below .500 at 39-68 at this juncture and went on to finish only 49-95.

a Rochester is off to its best 107-game start since the 2007 squad was 57-50.

JULY HEAT: The Red Wings have lost 5 of their last 6 and 6 of their last 8, but they are still 15-10 in July. That's the 2nd-best record in the International League in that time, 2.0 games behind Columbus. A list of the Top 5 clubs:

Rank Team Record

1. A0 17-8

2. 15-10

3. Indianapolis (Pirates) 15-11

4. Empire State (Yankees) 13-10

T5. Charlotte (White Sox) 13-11

Norfolk (Orioles) 13-11

a The Red Wings have lost 2 series in a row, losing 3 of 4 games both at Durham (Rays) and vs. Syracuse (Nationals). The Red Wings have lost back-to-back series for the first time since May 7- 14, when they lost 3 of 4 at Pawtucket (Red Sox) and all 4 games of a 4-game set at Syracuse. Rochester has yet to lose 3 series in a row.

A FUN RIDE: The Red Wings are 32-25 since sitting a season-worst 10 games below .500 at 20-30 on May 28. Going back further, Rochester is 38-32 beginning May 15. The Wings are also 43-39 beginning May 3, playing better than .500 baseball for more than half the season.

WE COULD USE MORE OF THIS: The Red Wings tonight return to interdivision action with a 30-22 record against teams outside of the International League North Division. Rochester is just 22-33 against its division foes.

a The Red Wings have completed 5 of their 8 season series outside the division. The Wings won series against Charlotte (5-3), Louisville (6-2), and Norfolk (6-2). They went 2-6 against Durham and 3-5 against Gwinnett. The Wings won just one season series overall in 2011, going 5-3 against Louisville. They had no series wins in 2010.

ROAD WOES: The Red Wings are just 16-29 in true road games, a record that does not include 8 contests as the "road" team against the Empire State Yankees at Frontier Field. (Empire State is playing 38 of its "home" games at Frontier Field while PNC Field in Moosic, Pennsylvania undergoes a season-long renovation.) Rochester has won just 2 road series all year, winning 3 of 4 games at Louisville June 14-17 and at Norfolk July 16-19.

LIAM ON ME: Liam Hendriks's 7 wins with the Red Wings have matched Andrew Baldwin's and Eric Hacker's team high from 2011. A win tonight would give Hendriks the most victories in one season by a Red Wings pitcher since 2008, when Philip Humber and Francisco Liriano both posted 10.

a Hendriks tossed a 7-inning shutout vs. Columbus June 4 at Frontier Field. It was the first shutout of his pro career, albeit a 7-inning game. It also was the 4th complete game of his pro career, his first since May 24, 2011 with Double-A New Britain vs. Binghamton.

THE BLISS OF CHRIS: Chris Parmelee is hitting .327 (17-for-52) with 4 doubles, 3 homers, 11 RBI, 9 walks, and a .426 on-base percentage in 13 games since the All-Star Break. The 3 homers have come in the last 2 days, including the 3rd multi-homer game of his career Thursday vs. Syracuse.

a Parmelee, who has enjoyed 3 stints with the Twins this year, has 7 homers in 32 games with the Red Wings overall. He has a .460 on-base percentage thanks to 26 walks and a .591 slugging percentage.

a Parmelee has hit safely in a season-high 7 consecutive games, going 11-for-29 (.379) with 3 doubles, 3 home runs, and 9 RBI. He also has hit safely in 11 of his last 12 games, batting .354 (17-for-48).

THIS DAY IN BASEBALL HISTORY: In 2006, Shairon Martis, tomorrow's Red Wings starter, gets traded to the Nationals from the Giants in exchange for left-handed reliever Mike Stanton...in 2003, Dave Miley, now the Empire State Yankees manager, replaces Bob Boone as Cincinnati Reds manager...in 1994, Rangers lefthander Kenny Rangers throws a perfect game against the Angels at the Ballpark in Arlington...in 1991, Expos righthander Dennis Martinez hurls a perfect game against the Dodgers at Dodger Stadium.
