Charlotte Knights News Release
(Fort Mill, SC) -- The Charlotte Knights welcomed the Gwinnett Braves to Knights Stadium on Saturday night after dropping three of four in the previous series against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees. The Knights were hoping to get back on the winning track, but fell just short in their quest on Saturday.
The Braves used a three-run sixth inning to take a lead they would not give up and they went on to win the opening game by a score of 5-3. With the Norfolk Tides loss to the Durham Bulls, the first place Knights maintained their seven-game lead in the IL South.
Miguel Batista (1-0, 3.60) started for Gwinnett and allowed two runs on five hits in five innings to pick up the win.
Jim Gallagher had a leadoff stand-up triple to start the home half of the third inning and Brent Morel drove him home with a base hit to right-field to put the Knights up 1-0.
Felix Pie tied things up in the fourth for the Braves with a long home run to right.
The Knights (61-48) took the lead back in the fifth when Josh Phegley led off with a double and Drew Garcia drove him home two outs later.
The lead was short-lived however, as Gwinnett scored three in the top of the sixth. Terry Tiffee homered in the inning for the Braves.
Dallas McPherson launched his 12th home run of the season high over the right-field wall in the Knights' sixth to bring the Knights within one again at 4-3.
Tiffee drove in Pie again in the eighth to provide Gwinnett with an insurance run.
Matt Zaleski (3-5, 4.14) started for the Knights and surrendered four runs on five hits in five innings, while striking out four to get the loss..
Game two of the series is Sunday at 2:15 p.m. Scott Carroll (0-0, 6.75) is set to pitch for Charlotte against Braves pitching prospect and 2011 IL Rookie of the Year Julio Teheran (6-5, 5.34). Gates open at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
