July 28, 2012 - International League (IL1)
Syracuse Mets News Release
The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals beat the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, 6-4, Saturday night at Alliance Bank Stadium. Jayson Werth drove in three runs and the Chiefs won their fourth game in five tries.
Lehigh Valley (58-50) wasted no time getting on the board in the top of the first inning. Kyle Hudson led off the inning with a single and came around to score on Domonic Brown's one-out, run-scoring double down the right-field line. Brown's first of two hits on the night gave the IronPigs a 1-0 lead.
Syracuse (51-56) evened things up against Lehigh Valley starter Tyson Brummett in the bottom of the fourth inning. Chad Tracy, making his fourth MLB rehab appearance with the Chiefs, led off the inning with his second single of the night. Then, Brett Carroll blasted a double into the alleyway in left-center field allowing Tracy to score from first to tie the game at one.
The Chiefs then snagged the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth inning. IronPigs reliever J.C. Ramirez walked Syracuse starter Jeff Mandel and Eury Perez to put runners on first and second base with one out. Werth, also making an MLB rehab appearance, then picked up his first hit in 15 at-bats with the Chiefs, clubbing a double off the wall in right-center field. Mandel scored on the double to give the Chiefs a 2-1 lead, but Perez was thrown out at the plate. Chad Tracy followed with another single, his third of the night, to score Werth in front of the throw from the right fielder Brown.
Meanwhile, Mandel mowed down the IronPigs. He overcame his first-inning hiccup to allow just one run on five hits over seven innings. Mandel recorded four one-two-three innings en route to his second win of the season.
The Chiefs then added some insurance in the bottom of the seventh inning. Pinch-hitter Manny Mayorson and Perez hit back-to-back one-out singles and moved to second and third base on a wild pitch by Ramirez. Werth then followed with a screaming liner up the middle that dropped in for a base hit to score Mayorson and Perez and give the Chiefs a 5-1 lead.
Syracuse added one more much-needed run in the bottom of the eighth inning on Josh Johnson's run-scoring single that brought home Jarrett Hoffpauir for the Chiefs' final run.
Lehigh Valley threatened in the top of the ninth inning. Against Pat Lehman, Hector Luna reached on an error by second baseman Jim Negrych, and Jason Pridie singled on a ground ball to second. Cody Overbeck then singled to center field to score Luna and bounce Lehman from the game. Closer Christian Garcia entered and got John Suomi to bounce into a fielder's choice for the first out of the inning. Pridie scored on the ground ball to cut the Chiefs lead to 6-3. Andres Blanco followed with a double to deep right-center field to put runners on second and third, but the Chiefs would hold on. After pinch-hitter Steve Susdorf's RBI groundout made it a 6-4 game, Garcia struck out Hudson to end the game.
The Chiefs and IronPigs meet in a double header starting at 3:00 Sunday. John Lannan is scheduled to start game one for Syracuse against B.J. Rosenberg. Tanner Roark is set to pitch game two for the Chiefs.
