FRONTIER FUN: The Rochester Red Wings tonight play the finale of their 6-game homestand and 2-game series against Pawtucket (Red Sox). The homestand started by losing 3 of 4 against Empire State (Yankees) and dropping last night's opener 9-3. The Red Wings tomorrow hit the road for a 2-game series at Lehigh Valley (Phillies). They then return to Frontier Field on Tuesday for another 6-game homestand. That stay along Morrie Silver Way includes a 4-game series vs. Indianapolis (Pirates) and a 2-game set vs. Empire State.
a Tonight's game with Pawtucket is being shown live on Time Warner Cable Sports (TWCS) Ch. 26.
a The Red Wings are 5 games into a stretch of playing 18 of their final 29 games at Frontier Field. All but 4 of Rochester's final 29 contests are against International League North Division rivals as well, the lone exception that series against Indianapolis.
ROSTER NEWS: Infielder Trevor Plouffe today begins a rehab assignment with the Red Wings. The 26-year-old is currently on the 15-Day Disabled List with a bruised right thumb. He played 4 seasons with the Red Wings from 2008-11, appearing in 337 games and batting .262 with 46 homers and 181 RBI. Plouffe made his major league debut with the Twins in 2011 and has spent the entire 2012 season with the big league club. He is batting .259 with 19 homers and 38 RBI in 74 games with Minnesota this year.
a Infielder Sean Burroughs has been placed on the 7-Day Disabled List with a lower back injury, retroactive to Wednesday. He has missed the 11 last games with the injury. Burroughs, a left-handed hitter, is batting .271 with a homer and 18 RBI in 67 games.
a Lefthander Luke French has been transferred to Double-A New Britain. He went 1-5 with a 6.42 ERA in 19 games (14 starts) with the Wings after his May 2 promotion from New Britain.
a Righthander Eric Hurley asked for and was granted his release today. He went 0-1 with a 14.14 ERA in 5 games (4 starts) with the Red Wings after signing with the Twins as a minor-league free agent July 22. Hurley started yesterday vs. Pawtucket and took the loss after giving up 7 runs on 8 hits in 2.0-plus innings.
HANGING IN THERE: The Red Wings have lost 4 of their last 5 games, yet they are still tied with Columbus (Indians) for the best record in the IL beginning July 1 at 23-15. A look at the best records since the start of July:
Rank Team Record
T1. 23-15
A0 23-15
3 Norfolk (Orioles) 21-16
4. Charlotte (White Sox) 20-17
5. Indianapolis 21-18
a The Red Wings are 40-30 since sitting a season-worst 10 games below .500 at 20-30 on May 28. Going back further, Rochester is 46-37 beginning May 15 and 51-44 beginning May 3.
WINNING WAYS: At 60-60, the Red Wings are off to their best 120-game start since 2007, when they were 65-55. The 2011 club was 28 games under .500 at 46-74 at this point last season and finished 53-91. The 2010 team was 32 games below .500 at 44-76 at this juncture and went on to inish only 49-95.
MAYBE NEXT TIME: By losing 8 of their first 13 games against the PawSox, t he Red Wings will be winless in 3 straight season series against their IL North rival. The Wings haven't won a season series against Pawtucket since 2009, when they went 10-6.
a Rochester is just 23-37 within the division, yet is 37-23 against teams outside the IL North. The Wings currently have a losing record against each of the North rivals: Buffalo (4-5), Empire State (6-8), Lehigh Valley (5-6), Pawtucket (5-8), and Syracuse (3-10).
IN NEED OF A WIN: The Red Wings need to win tonight to avoid dipping below the .500 mark for the first time since they were 55-56 after a 10-8 win in 12 innings July 31 at Columbus.
a A victory tonight by starter Pedro Hernandez or a winless reliever would give the Red Wings 23 different pitchers with at least one win. With 22 already in the books, the Red Wings have tied the Rochester franchise mark from 1998. Rochester had 18 different hurlers win at least one game in 2011.
START ME UP: Red Wings' starting pitchers are winless in the last 7 games, going 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA (23 ER/23.0 IP) in that time. The last starter to garner a win was Shairon Martis August 3 at Toledo (Tigers).
a Red Wings starters have 32 wins overall, 17 of which are attached to pitchers now with Minnesota.
MORE RUNS NEEDED: The Red Wings have scored 5 runs or less in 6 straight games at Frontier Field and in 8 of their last 9 along Morrie Silver Way. The lone exception in that time is a 17-9 loss vs. Syracuse (Nationals) on July 26. The Red Wings have lost 7 of their last 9 home games since winning 8 of their previous 9.
a Rochester has scored a league-low 459 runs, 22 behind the closest team Lehigh Valley, which has 481.
HOMER HAPPY: The Red Wings have hit 9 home runs in 9 games in August. Only Buffalo (Mets) and Louisville (Reds) in the IL have hit more in the month with 10 in 9 games as well. Chris Parmelee owns 4 of those homers, a total that leads the league in that same time.
