Syracuse Mets News Release

The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, won the finale of a two-game set with a 6-0 win over the Lehigh Valley IronPigs on Saturday night. Left-hander Zach Duke tossed a three-hit shutout in the win for his first complete game since April 13, 2009, as the Chiefs won their fourth of five games.

Syracuse (59-62) started the scoring on the game's second batter, second baseman Jarrett Hoffpauir. With one out, Hoffpauir blasted a solo home run down the left-field line off of IronPigs starter Tom Cochran. The homer, Hoffpauir's third in eight games, gave the Chiefs a 1-0 lead.

Duke and Cochran then traded zeroes until the top of the sixth inning, when the Chiefs struck for two more runs. After a one-out walk to Carlos Rivero, first baseman Mark Teahen slammed a double high off the right-center field wall. Rivero raced home from first base for Syracuse's second run. After Teahen was thrown out trying to round third base on a Zach Walters infield single, Jesus Valdez laced an RBI triple down the right field line, putting the Chiefs ahead, 3-0.

Syracuse added three more runs in the seventh inning with right-hander Justin DeFratus in for the IronPigs. Hoffpauir singled in Eury Perez with no outs in the inning, and two batters later, Rivero destroyed a two-run home run deep down the left-field line. That gave the Chiefs their final runs and a 6-0 advantage.

Meanwhile, Lehigh Valley (65-57) was shut down all evening by the left arm of Duke. The International League's wins leader allowed just three hits - a second-inning Hector Luna single, a sixth-inning Kyle Hudson single and a ninth-inning Steve Susdorf double. Susdorf, who reached second base with one out in the ninth, was the only IronPig to reach scoring position all night.

Duke struck out seven total batters without walking anyone in the game. At one point from the fourth inning until the ninth, Duke tossed a first-pitch strike to 15 consecutive batters. He threw 92 total pitches, 66 for strikes.

Syracuse returns home next to start a three-game, two-day series against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees. The teams will tangle as part of a doubleheader starting at 5:00 on Sunday. Right-handers Yunesky Maya and Mitch Atkins are scheduled to throw for the Chiefs, with right-handers Adam Warren and Chase Whitley slated to pitch for the Yankees.
