St. George RoadRunners News Release
ST. GEORGE - After an entertaining 17 innings of baseball, the St. George RoadRunners and the Edmonton Capitals split a doubleheader on Saturday at Bruce Hurts Field. A solo homer propelled Edmonton to a 6-5 game one win while a walk-off single in the ninth inning gave St. George the nightcap 4-3.
St. George sits at 7-3 on the season after winning its third consecutive series.
In game one, the Capitals led 5-2 going into the seventh, but Alexis Gomez sent the game in to extra innings with a three-run homer off Derrick DePriest, his third. Edmonton would get all the offense it would need after Joe Jiannetti blasted Vic Darensbourg's first pitch of the eighth inning over the wall in right-center field.
DePriest would earn the win after southpaw Jason Pearson closed out the final two out for the save.
In the nightcap, the RoadRunners scored first and counter punched any time Edmonton scored.
Tied 3-3 entering the ninth, Bartolome Fortunato threw a bunted ball by Max Poulin into right field. With Poulin at third after the error, Fortunato (W, 1-0) recovered and struck out Gary Harris, Marcus Nettles and Jorge Cortes to end the threat.
St. George used a little two-out magic off Aaron Easton (L, 2-1) to push across the game winner. Jose Rodriguez beat out a double play and moved to second when Ryan Stevenson walked. Ruddy Yan bounced an infield single behind the second base bag to load the bases for Gomez. On a 1-2 count, Gomez lined the game winning single to left field and give the âRunners the 4-3 triumph.
Sunday is a scheduled off day. The boys in burnt-orange return to action Monday night for the first of three with the Chico Outlaws. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm. The RoadRunners are expected to start right-hander Mac Nelson (2-0).
The RoadRunners Radio Network will have coverage of Monday's series opener beginning at 6:45pm Mountain with John Potter.
