St. George RoadRunners News Release

ST. GEORGE - Behind a complete game from former Edmonton standout Eric Van Slyke, the St. George RoadRunners took the first game of a three-game series 9-5 over the Capitals Friday night at Bruce Hurst Field.

The right-hander allowed five runs, only one earned, on 12 hits to even his 2009 season mark to 1-1.

St. George took the lead in the fourth on an Angel Sanchez RBI double to score Alexis Gomez.

The 1-0 pitchers duel between Van Slyke and Caps' starter Chris Little (L, 0-1) turned sour for the visitors when STG pounded out six runs in the sixth inning. Henry Calderon drew a bases loaded walk to start the scoring. Jose Rodriguez singled home another run and Yosvany Almario blooped a two-run single to right to open the floodgates. DH Juan Serrano added an RBI sacrifice fly to end the scoring rally.

A.J. Valentine blasted a monster two-run homer to right field to push the St. George lead to eight.

The Capitals closed the gap in the ninth inning scoring four unearned runs, but Van Slyke closed the complete game by striking out Norm Hutchins.

The RoadRunners smacked 10 hits led by Sanchez with three and Valentine with two. Edmonton outhit STG by two with 12 hits - LF Marcus Nettles paced the Caps with three.

Games two and three of the series will be played as part of a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 4:05pm. St. George is scheduled to throw Monte Mansfield in game one and David Seccombe in game two. Edmonton is slated to start right-handers Kris Honel and Paige Dumont.

The RoadRunners Radio Network will have coverage of both games beginning at 3:45pm Mountain with John Potter.
