Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

EDINBURG- Matison Smith scattered 10 hits through eight innings to lead the Edinburg Roadrunners to a 9-2 victory against the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings Thursday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

Smith (8-6), who likely will not be in manager Vince Moore's starting pitching rotation once the postseason begins allowed just two earned runs in his team-high 18th start of the season. Both came because of Alex Ruiz, who doubled home Bryan Marquez in the first inning and then scored in the sixth on Mario Mercedes' team-high 44th run batted in of the season.

The United Division champion Roadrunners (57-35) overcame an initial 1-0 deficit with three first inning runs off Cole Stephens (6-7), highlighted by Derek Perren's single to centerfield to plate Carlos Hereaud that gave Edinburg a 2-1 lead. Perren collected a team-high three hits on the night and recently acquired slugger Joe Weik walked four times in the game, scoring twice and driving in his 63rd run of the year in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 7-2.

The WhiteWings (50-41) will play Edinburg again tonight at 7:05 p.m. at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
