
Roadrunners Win Third Straight over 'Wings

EDINBURG, Texas - The Edinburg Roadrunners defeated the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings 9-2 Thursday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium for their third straight victory.
Matison Smith (8-6) gave the Roadrunners (57-35) eight strong innings while allowing two runs on 10 hits.
The WhiteWings (50-41) grabbed the early lead in the top of the first against Smith. Bryan Marquez reached on a one-out double and then came in to score on an RBI double by Romulo Ruiz that made it 1-0.
The Roadrunners answered back as they got RBI singles from Carlos Hereaud, Derek Perren, and Stantrel Smith taking the 3-1 lead in the bottom of the first.
Edinburg extended their lead in the bottom of the third against starter Coleman Stephens. Felix Molina hit an RBI single that allowed Joe Weik to score. A throwing error on a single by Eric Bloom sailed into the dugout allowing Molina to come in and score pushed the lead 5-1.
After the Roadrunners added a run in the bottom of the fourth, RGV picked up another run in the top of the sixth on an RBI fielder's choice by Mario Mercedes that made it 6-2 Edinburg.
The Roadrunners scored a run in the bottom of the sixth and two more in the bottom of the seventh pushing their lead to 9-2 and then Jose Oyervidez closed out the top of the ninth with a scoreless inning giving Edinburg the victory.
Stephens (6-7) took the loss after allowing six runs, five earned, in three and two-third innings pitched with three strike outs.
The Roadrunners and WhiteWings will continue their series Friday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
