Willmar Stingers News Release
WATERLOO, Iowa -- The difficulties of a long road trip are many and they were plainly evident in the Stingers' 11-5 loss against the Waterloo Bucks on the final game of an eight-day stretch away from Willmar. The Stingers collected more hits than the Bucks, but Waterloo's pesky speed pressured the Willmar defense into five errors as nine of the 11 runs scored were unearned.
The game started well for the Stingers who cracked onto the scoreboard first for the second straight night. Michael Suchy (Florida Gulf Coast) singled, Danny Brennan (St. Louis) walked and Marc Flores continued his remarkable production with a 2-RBI single. The pair of steaks improved Flores' season total to 58, just four shy of tying the franchise record of 62 established by Suchy in 2012. After Max Kuhn (Kentucky) rolled into a fielder's choice and advanced to 2nd base on a pass ball, Nick Halamandaris (California) notched a 2-out RBI, giving the Stingers a 3-0 lead in the 1st inning. Halamandaris, the CDI player of the game, registered two hits for the second straight game after a brief post-all-star-break slump.
Nick Bates (St. Louis) pitched 2.1 innings of effective relief late in the game, but the Bucks bullpen was similarly stingy in the later innings. The Stingers managed another pair of runs in the 5th inning against Waterloo pitcher Jacob Stone, who had pitched a no-hitter earlier in the season. Suchy and Brennan once again began the inning by reaching with a pair of singled. Then, after loading the bases with nobody out, Suchy scored on a groundout and Brennan was driven home on a single by Kuhn.
The Stingers will make a quick turnaround, playing at noon today at home against the Alexandria Blue Anchors then making a trip to St. Cloud for a 6:05 game.
