Hanawahine Leads Offensive Outburst in Win

(Rochester,MN) - Kalei Hanawahine (Hawaii) made his strongest offensive contribution of the season as he drove in five runs in a 9-6 win over the Thunder Bay Border Cats on Sunday, August 4, at Subway Field in Thunder Bay, Ontario.

Jason Vosler drove a two-run double and also scored a run in the bottom of the first inning to give the Border Cats an early 3-0 lead.

Tyler Baker (Wichita State) reached on an error to start the top half of the second inning for the Honkers. Reid Roper (Illinois) was walked and Kevin Barker (UC Davis) was hit by a pitch to fill the bases with no outs in the inning. Matt Halloran (Minnesota) singled to score Baker and get the Honkers on the scoreboard, while Roper came in on a sacrifice fly from Mike Friel (Hofstra.) Hanawahine delivered a two-run single to score Barker and Halloran. Hanawahine scored the fifth run of the inning on a two-two out single from Caleb Dugas (Copiah-Lincoln Community College) to take a 5-3 lead.

Friel drew a one-out walk in the top of the fourth inning, advanced to second base on an error, and scored on a two-out RBI single from Hanawahine to increase Rochester's lead to 6-3. Thunder Bay got one run back in the bottom of the fifth inning when Ty Stetson singled to start the inning and eventually came around to score on a RBI ground out from Tyler Duplantis.

Friel and Jared Deacon (Cal State Fullerton) were hit by pitches in consecutive plate appearances to start the top of the sixth inning. Both runners scored on a two-run triple from Hanawahine. Dugas followed with a single to score Hanawahine and increase the lead to 9-4.

Logan Spitzack (St. Cloud State) earned the win (3-2) for the Honkers. He allowed four runs on eight hits in six innings of work. Jordan Church took the loss (1-6) for the Border Cats, as he allowed nine runs on seven hits in five innings. Brandon Stennis (Doane College) allowed a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, but was able to hold on to seal the win.

Hanawahine led the Honkers offense by going 3-for-5 with a triple, two runs scored, and five RBI on the night. Dugas added a pair of hits and 2 RBI in the win.

The two teams will wrap up the two game series on Monday, August 5, at 6:05 p.m. (CT) in Thunder Bay. Matt Kent (Texas A&M) is scheduled to start for Rochester (7-21, 25-38.) Chris Kerwood (Arkansas State) is slated to start for Thunder Bay (6-22, 19-44.) The game will conclude an eight-game road trip, as well as the road schedule, for the Honkers before returning home for a six-game home stand that will end the regular season. The home stand begins on Tuesday, August 6, at 7:05 p.m. as the Battle Creek Bombers come to Mayo Field to begin a two-game series. Rochester will also play a pair of games with the Lakeshore Chinooks and the Duluth Huskies in the home stand.
