Road Not the Same as Home, Saints Lose First Game of Season 8-3

AMARILLO, TX (May 26, 2015) - The St. Paul Saints found out the road was not as friendly as CHS Field. In their first game on the longest roadtrip of the season the Saints lost 8-3 to the Amarillo Thunderheads on Tuesday night at Potter County Memorial Stadium.

The Saints had an opportunity to get on the board first in the second inning when they had runners at second and third and no outs. Angelo Songco popped out, but Vinny DiFazio walked to load the bases. Steve Nikorak grounded into a fielder's choice that forced the runner at the plate and Anthony Phillips flew out to end the inning.

The Thunderheads capitalized in the bottom of the inning when Rene Leveret led off with a single. With one out he advanced on a single by Juan Martinez. With two outs Taylor Smart gave the Thunderheads a 1-0 lead with an RBI single.

With the score 2-1 in the sixth the Thunderheads tacked on three. Zach MacPhee led off with a single. He scored on a triple by Drew Heid to make it 3-1. Three batters later Martinez hit a two-run homer, his first of the season, to make it 5-1.

The Saints rallied in the seventh when Alonzo Harris singled with one out. He stoles second and scored on a Sam Maus single. Ian Gac followed with an RBI double to make it 5-3.

The Thunderheads, however, put the finishing touches on the game when they scored three in the bottom of the inning. Four walks, a single and a sacrifice fly accounted for all three runs.

The same two teams meet in game two of the three game series on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send RHP Dustin Crenshaw (1-0, 1.50) to the mound againt Thunderheads LHP Clayton Tanner (0-0, 4.26). The game can be heard on Club 1220 KLBB.
