Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
SIOUX FALLS, SD - It was a pitch-perfect night for baseball in Sioux Falls (3-2), as the Birds' hosted the Quebec Capitales (2-3) for game two of a three game series.
The Birds' would score first in the bottom of the first from a David Bergin RBI single, but the Canaries lead wouldn't last long.
Quebec would figure out starting pitcher Brett Gerritse (0-1) in the top of the second as newly signed Quebec outfielder Michael Washburn would rope an RBI single to right field. Gerritse would settle in for the middle portion of the game, but would ultimately exit the game going 4.2 innings while giving up ten hits on six runs and striking out five.
Looking for some offensive power, Jason Repko would step up to the plate in the fourth inning and hit his second home-run of the season.
The Canaries would turn to the bullpen as LHP Josh Ferrell would face one batter in the top of the fifth and strikeout Washburn. In the top of the sixth, RHP Byron Minnich would give up a lone single, but retire the next two batters.
Quebec starting pitcher Karl Gelinas would make his way out to the mound in the bottom of the sixth inning. He would give up just one single to Canaries outfielder Bryan Humphries.
Heading into the bottom of the seventh, rookie Vickash Ramjit would stroke a two run home-run over the left field wall and bring the score within two runs for the Canaries.
Canaries would send closer Chase Johnson to the mound to shut the door in the top of ninth to lead the way for the Birds' top hitters in the bottom of the ninth. The Birds' would get a hit from catcher Richard Stock off the center field wall, but that would be all as the Capitales defeat the Canaries 7-5.
In all, the Birds' totaled five runs on nine hits. Tonight's total attendance was 2,075.
The Canaries continue their eight-game home stand tomorrow night against the Quebec Capitales, with RHP Jeremy Strawn (0-0) making his second start of the season. It will be Thirsty Thursday at the Birdcage. Beer will be $1 from 5-7 p.m. and $2.50 until the end of the seventh inning. Come early for Cagey's Pre-Game Tailgate Party, and fans can also take advantage of discounted general admission tickets for just $5!
