Rivets Can't Recover from Early Deficit, Lose 7-3
July 3, 2018 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Rockford Rivets News Release
Kalamazoo, Mi. - The Kalamazoo Growlers (24-11) jumped on the Rockford Rivets (18-16) quick and were able to finish them off for a 7-3 win on Monday night at Homer Stryker Field.
After a scoreless top of the first, Jonathan Foster doubled off the wall in left to bring two runs home and the Growlers never looked back. They would bring home two more runs that inning and then another two in the second to build their lead to 6-0 where it would stay until the seventh inning.
Brock Martin provided some life for the dormant Rivets' offense with his two-run double in the seventh. Hal Hughes was also able to get an RBI under his belt with a sac-fly in the eighth, but after the Growlers put up one more in the bottom of the inning, the Rivets couldn't muster up a comeback.
A highlight for the Rivets was the pitching of Anthony Holubecki, who came on in the fourth inning in relief of starting pitcher Evan Snyder. Holubecki threw five innings, allowing one hit, one run, one walk, and striking out eight. At one-point, Holubecki had retired 12 straight batters.
"Anthony [Holubecki] did a great job the final five innings," Rivets' Manager Brian Smith said of the Notre Dame reliever, "He's getting better and better every time he goes out there. The more guys we can trust in situations like that, the better off we'll be in the long run."
The Rivets finished the game with six hits compared to just four by the Growlers. Ryan Cole was the only Rivet with multiple hits.
The Rivets finish of the four game road trip with another game against the Growlers. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 CDT.
