Peoria Rivermen News Release
For the second straight game, the Peoria Rivermen scored on their first shift of the game but it proved to be their only lead of the night as the Chicago Wolves held off the Rivermen 5-3 at Allstate Arena on Saturday night. The loss extended Peoria's season-long losing streak to four games.
Both teams exchanged goals in the opening 58 seconds of play. Jay Barriball scored his second goal of the season just 19 seconds into the first period with T.J. Hensick and Derek Nesbitt contributing assists on the play. Chicago responded just 39 seconds later with Nathan Longpre's 5th goal of the year.
While on their first power play of the game, Adam Cracknell hooked Jordan Schroeder while on a breakaway which setup a penalty shot against Jake Allen. Allen came up with the save at the 9:42 mark of the first period to keep the game tied.
The Wolves took the lead while on their first power play at 18:09 with Mark Matheson's second goal of the season. Steve Reinprecht took a shot from the right point and Matheson redirected the puck into the back of the net giving Chicago a 2-1 lead.
After a scoreless second period, Tim Miller notched his third goal of the season at the 7:12 mark of the third. While Brett Ponich was coming around his own goal, Miller stripped him of the puck and wrapped it past an unsuspecting Allen.
The Rivermen cut Chicago's lead in half with a goal at 9:42. David Shields took a shot that bounced off the boards right to the stick of Phil McRae who was able to make it a 3-2 contest. The goal was McRae's 11th of the year and second in as many nights.
Schroeder's third goal of the year made it 4-2 at 12:58. While on the power play, the puck was loose in Peoria's crease. Allen failed to cover the puck and Schroeder shot the puck through the goaltender's legs. Reinprecht and Rodin also assisted on the goal.
At 15:45, Barriball scored his second of the game making it a one-goal affair once again. Barriball and T.J. Hensick exchanged passes in Chicago's zone before Barriball was able to beat Lack from a bad angle.
Schroeder sealed the game with an empty net goal at 19:16.
Peoria was 0-for-3 on the power play, while Chicago went 2-for-3. Allen finished with 30 saves while Eddie Lack turned away 21 of Peoria's 24 shots on goal.
The Rivermen take on the Wolves again on Sunday at 3 p.m. from Allstate Arena. The game can be heard on CD Country 107.9 FM or online through www.rivermen.net.
