Portland Pirates News Release

Worcester, Massachusetts - Andy Miele notched a pair of assists and Matt Watkins contributed a goal and an assist as the Portland Pirates defeated the Worcester Sharks by a count of 3-1 this evening in front of 3,597 at the DCU Center.

Dean Arsene and Brett MacLean also tallied for Portland and Curtis McElhinney stopped 29 shots as the Pirates improved to 10-7-1-1 overall and are 6-0-1-0 in their last seven games.

Nathan Moon recorded the lone Worcester goal as the Sharks dropped their third straight contest in falling to 6-6-3-2 on the season.

Just over eight minutes into the game, Arsene got the visitors on the board first with his first goal of the season, a slapshot from the blue line with Igor Gongalsky screening Worcester goaltender Tyson Sexsmith. The Sharks would provide an answer before the end of the first period, with Moon knocking home his third of the season in a scrum to the left of the goaltender's crease with less than three minutes remaining in the opening frame. MacLean provided the only tally of the middle stanza, netting a power-play goal for his second of the season with less than five minutes remaining. Four minutes into the third period, Watkins upped the Portland lead to two with a wrist-shot from the left circle beating Sexsmith to his glove side to set the final margin.

The Pirates out-shot the Sharks 31-30 as McElhinney improved to 6-7-0 on the season. Sexsmith stopped 28 shots while dropping to 3-5-2.

The Allied Home Mortgage Three Stars of the Game were: 1. Miele; 2. Watkins; 3. McElhinney.
