SOUTHAVEN, Miss – The two-time defending CHL champion Memphis RiverKings swung their way past the Wichita Thunder Thursday night, defeating the Northwest Division foes 6-2 before a crowd of 2,758 at the DeSoto Civic Center.

RiverKings captain Don Parsons scored off assists by Daryl Moor and Stephen Margeson midway through the third period to secure the victory for the RiverKings, who won for the first time this season against the Thunder.

The game, which saw both teams involved in several fracases on the ice throughout the final two periods, ended in ugly fashion as RiverKings goaltender Jean-Francois Racine got entangled in two near-brawls within the last two minutes. During the second of the two brawls, which occurred with only :30 seconds remaining, Racine was ejected on a game misconduct penalty.

Racine's ejection, coupled with goaltender Mike Minard being called up by the St. John's Maple Leafs of the AHL earlier in the day, led the RiverKings to put forward Brad Mueller, dressed for the contest as the backup goaltender, onto the ice for the final half-minute of play. Mueller came through for the RiverKings, stopping the only shot he faced.

The RiverKing were led in scoring on the night by Parsons, who picked up four points (2G, 2A). Also scoring goals for the ‘Kings were veterans Derek Landmesser and Jay Neal, as well as forward Jerry Gernander and defenseman Stephen Margeson.

The win moved the RiverKings (23-15-0) back into the lead in the Northeast Division with 46 points, one better than second-place Bossier-Shreveport.

The RiverKings will be back in action tomorrow night as they host the New Mexico Scorpions. Game time is set for 7:05 pm CST at the DeSoto Civic Center.
