Mississippi RiverKings News Release


The playoff -bound RiverKings host a pair of teams that are directly behind them in the Northern Conference playoff standings this weekend. The Oklahoma City Blazers and the Youngstown Steelhounds will be at the DCC on Friday and Saturday, respectively. The Blazers and Steelhounds each have 69 standings points, four points back of the RiverKings. Both clubs are on the cusp of securing playoff spots. The RiverKings, Colorado and Bossier-Shreveport have already clinched postseason berths in the Northern Conference. The RiverKings will be looking to end a five game winless streak (0-3-2) entering Friday's game.

Thursday, March 1

Youngstown 5 Memphis 4 OT @ YNG

Youngstown's Josh Reed converted in the eighth round of the shootout for the game winning goal. Brad Wanchulak, Ryan Held, Derek Landmesser and Steve Makway scored for the RiverKings. The game was tied at one after the first, at three after two periods and at four at the end of regulation. The Steelhounds outshot the RiverKings 38-25 as Brad Roberts made 21 saves to get the win. He also stopped seven straight RiverKings attempts in the shootout after Jason Sessa converted on the team's first chance. Milan Maslonka and Reed scored their first goals of the season for Youngstown. Larry Sterling stopped 33 shots in getting tagged with the OTL.

Friday, March 2

Youngstown 4 Memphis 1 @ YNG

Neither team scored in the first period while Youngstown's Garrett Larson and the RiverKings' Brad Wanchulak traded goals in the second. The Youngstown penalty kill was clutch during the contest holding the RiverKings' power play scoreless on 10 chances. The RiverKings came out in the third period and outshot the Steelhounds 15-9, but it was the Steelhounds who found the back of the net. Goals from Stephen Margeson and Matt Hanson gave the home team a 3-1 lead. Chris Richards added an empty net goal to make the final 4-1. Brad Roberts stopped 32 of 33 shots to get the win. Larry Sterling made 32 saves in the loss.

Saturday, March 3

Youngstown 4 Memphis 1 @ YNG

Youngstown's Jeff Christian collected a pair of goals as the Steelhounds won their sixth straight game. The game started well for the RiverKings as Ryan Held scored his 14th goal of the season at 4:45 of the first period. Goals from Tab Lardner and Jeff Alcombrack in the second period were followed by a pair of scores by Jeff Christian in the third to make the final 4-1.

Youngstown went 3-6 on the power play while the RiverKings were held scoreless on three chances. Kevin Schieve started and took the loss in net for Memphis with 31 saves on 35 shots. Brad Roberts stopped 31 shots in earning the win.

NEW ADDITION TO RIVERKINGS FAMILY

Louis Dumont and his wife Hayley saw their family grow from 3 members to 4 on Monday with the birth of baby boy Jacques Louis. Jacques weighed in at 8 lbs, 7 ounces and, according to the proud father, "shoots right and is a defenseman." Louis and Hayley also have a daughter, 2 year old Camille. Congratulations to the Dumonts.

RIVERKINGS BACK IN PLAYOFFS

The RiverKings clinched a berth in the 2007 CHL President's Cup playoffs over the weekend when Tulsa lost at Bossier-Shreveport on Friday. It will be the 9th time that the RiverKings will participate in the CHL postseason in their 15 year history. It will also be their first postseason appearance since winning the President's Cup in the 2002-03 season.

FRIDAY'S GAME WILL BE ON 96.1 FM

Friday's RiverKings game versus Oklahoma City will be on WYYL 96.1 FM due to a conflict with Sports 56's play by play coverage of the Conference USA Tournament. The face off will be at 7:05 with the pregame show starting at 6:45 The RiverKings' game on Saturday at 7:05 with Youngstown will be back on Sports 56 (AM 560).

LAREDO IS NEW NUMBER ONE TEAM IN CHL POLL, RIVERKINGS FOURTH

The Laredo Bucks have taken over the top ranking in this week's CHL Coaches Poll. The Bucks are the 6th different team to occupy that number one spot. The RiverKings, who are fourth in this week's poll, held top billing for two weeks earlier this season. Following Laredo, the remainder of the top 10 includes Colorado, Bossier-Shreveport, Memphis, Oklahoma City, Youngstown, Corpus Christi, Arizona, New Mexico and Amarillo.

RIVERKINGS HERE AND THERE

After collecting his 14th goal of the season on Saturday night, forward Ryan Held has scored 7 goals in his last 8 games.

When the RiverKings host Youngstown on Saturday night, they will be playing the Steelhounds for the fifth time in 16 days. The RiverKings and Steelhounds will close out their 12 game season series on Friday, 3/23 at the DCC.

Forward Tyler McGregor has an assist in each of the last 3 games. The 3 game assist and point streaks are both career highs for the rookie out of Holy Cross.

The loss at Youngstown on Saturday marked the first time this season that the RiverKings had lost when leading after the first period. The team is now 21-1-1 when finding the back of the net first.

The RiverKings' 15 road wins are second to only Laredo's 20 in the CHL. Oklahoma City, Bossier-Shreveport and Corpus Christi also have 15 wins away from home ice.

The RiverKings have 10 games remaining in the regular season, 5 at home and 5 on the road. Starting with Tuesday's game at Tulsa, the team will finish with 8 games in the final 12 days of the season.

Defenseman Derek Landmesser leads all defensemen in scoring with 58 points and in power play goals with 9. Landmesser's 46 assists are second among d-men and fourth among all skaters.

FORMER FULL HOUSE STAR TO SPEAK AT FAITH AND FAMILY NIGHT GAME ON 3/24

Candace Cameron Bure, who played DJ Tanner TV's Full House, is going to be the featured speaker for Faith and Family Night when the RiverKings host the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs on Saturday, March 24. Candace's testimony, titled "Walk Through Faith" tells of her faith and how it has transformed her life as a person, wife and mother. Her "Walk Through Faith" will take place at 5:30 with the game starting that night at 7:05. Candace has been married to former NHL star Valeri Bure for 10 years. She will be signing autographs during the first intermission and is scheduled to drop the ceremonial first puck. Groups of 20 or more can get tickets for just $5 a ticket for the game. A game ticket will get you in for Candace's presentation at 5:30 as well. Doors will open at 5pm. The RiverKings are also encouraging all fans to wear white for the Fan Appreciation Night White Out.
