RiverKings Top Conference Leader in Colorado

(Loveland, CO) -- Kevin Beech allowed only two goals and five separate players scored goals, as the Mississippi RiverKings defeated the Colorado Eagles 5-2 at the Budweiser Events Center in Loveland, Colorado on Friday night, February 13th.

With the victory, the RiverKings remain three points behind Bossier-Shreveport in the Northeast Division race, and are still third in the conference playoff ladder going into a rematch tomorrow night against the Eagles in Colorado.

Colorado opened the scoring in the first period with a goal from inside the attacking blue line by Scott Polaski for a 1-0 lead at 6:07.

Mississippi answered with an unassisted goal from Adam Smyth, who surprised Colorado goaltender Andrew Penner with a shot from the right wall for his sixth goal of the season at 7:03 of the first frame.

The RiverKings took a 2-1 lead on a feed to Martin Gascon to Louis Dumont at the crease, who posted his 16th goal of the season on the play at 1:27.

Mississippi added to the advantage, when Steward poked the puck past Penner into the net for his sixth goal of the year, assisted by Darrell Stoddard at 8:51 for a 3-1 lead after two periods of play.

In the third period, Mississippi added to the lead with a pair of goals, as Martin Gascon notched his first as a RiverKings on a feed from Dumont at 6:39 for a 4-1 lead. That was followed by Dane Marshall netting a goal at 7:11 for a 5-1 edge.

Colorado ended the scoring when Aaron Schneekloth beat Mississippi goaltender Kevin Beech on the power play for the final 5-2 margin.

The Eagles out shot the RiverKings 36-30 for the contest, with Beech stopping 34 shots for his 25th victory. Penner made 25 saves in the losing effort for the Eagles.

Colorado scored the only power play goal of the night, going 1-for-6 with the man advantage. Mississippi was scoreless in four power play chances.

The RiverKings' next home game will be Friday, February 20th against Wichita, which will be LeBonheur "Locks of Love" night, presented by Wilson Perry Salon and Day Spa.
