February 13, 2009 - Central Hockey League (CHL) News Release
1- The hottest team in the CHL is the RGV Killer Bees who have won five straight games heading into their pair of games this weekend at Corpus Christi. The Bees are coming off their first win in Laredo since November 28th, 2006 on Tuesday with a 5-4 win. The Bees have gotten to within four points of the Bucks in the Southeast Division for second place. RGV has outscored their opponents 22-13 over their win streak with Jesse Bennefield leading the way with 12 points (6-6=12) in his last six games. Christian Boucher has been the team's workhorse playing in the last 10 games (6-4-0 over that stretch). The Bees are 6-1-0 this season versus Corpus Christi.
2- The balance of power in the Southern Conference will be at stake this weekend when the Odessa Jackalopes (30-12-5) play the Texas Brahmas (31-12-4) on Friday and Saturday at the NYTEX Sports Centre. The teams have split two games thus far (both at NYTEX) with two games remaining in the season series after this weekend (Feb. 21 and Mar. 7). The Brahmas are currently one point ahead of the Jacks in the Southern Conference. Texas has lost back-to-back games and Odessa's slide continued on Wednesday night (a 5-0 loss to New Mexico) with their fourth straight loss (0-2-2). Odessa boasts the two top scores in the league with Dominic Leveille (70 points) and Sebastien Thinel (66 points).
3- Colorado Eagles (36-8-2) Head Coach Kevin McClelland will see his old club for the first time at the Budweiser Events Center on Friday and Saturday when the Mississippi RiverKings (29-14-3) visit. 'Mac' posted a 100-77-15 record in three seasons as the bench boss with the 'Kings. The two teams met in early November for a pair of games in Mississippi and the RiverKings, under new Head Coach Kevin Kaminski, left an impression as the first team to beat the Eagles this season ending Colorado's eight-game win streak to start the season. The team's split the two games. Mississippi will be without their leading goal scorer Bobby Chaumont (25 goals) who was placed on the 14-day injured reserve (retroactive to February 6th). The 'Kings are 6-1-3 in their last 10 games. Colorado is coming off a 5-3 victory on Wednesday over Arizona clinching a playoff spot amazingly before Valentine's Day. The Eagles have been to the post-seasons in each of their six seasons.
Joining the 700-Club - Corpus Christi's Chris Richards is just two points away from joining the CHL's 700-Club. The veteran center has 230 career goals and 468 career assists giving him 698 points. Only four players in the history of the CHL have accumulated more points than Richards (Joe Burton, Travis Clayton, Doug Lawrence and Jason Duda).
