Mississippi RiverKings News Release
SOUTHAVEN, Miss. -- Life for eight-year-old Noah Hoskin and his family changed drastically on May 3, 2011. That spring day an MRI revealed a large tumor in Noah's back, forcing an immediate trip to St. Jude's Hospital.
"The tumor in Noah's back was so big he couldn't lay completely flat," said Noah's big sister Allison Brigance.
Noah was immediately diagnosed with stage-4 neuroblastoma, more commonly known as cancer; a word that Allison says is off limits in their family.
"We don't say cancer," she said adamantly, noting that the ¬Ëc-word' and its overbearing connotation are too much to use around her little brother.
Noah's had five rounds of chemotherapy and two stints of radiation in just the short six months since his diagnosis. In September doctors at St. Jude told Noah and his family the cancer spread, and suggested they travel to Philadelphia for a new treatment opportunity.
Noah's family believes that treatment to be too risky of an option, so he's recently switched to a strict holistic diet that consists mostly of organic fruits, vegetables, fish and some chicken. Acupuncture has also been added to Noah's regimen, one that Allison says is suiting him well.
"He's doing good right now," she said, "he loves lions and he's our brave lion."
Speaking of Noah's love for lions, Make-A-Wish Foundation is helping to grant Noah's wish to see lions up-close and personal with a trip to Disney World's Animal Kingdom next month. A trip Allison knows her brother will enjoy.
Nancy Hearn, owner of the Southaven Fazoli's on Goodman Road heard about Noah through her accountant Brenda, who is a friend of Noah's family and wanted to do something to help.
"Noah's story is one that reaches out and touches your heart. It makes you want to do something, to make a difference," Hearn said.
So Hearn's Fazoli's (215 E. Goodman Road) is hosting a fundraiser for Noah on Monday, Nov. 28 from 5 to 8 p.m., with 20 percent of all purchases made during that three hour stretch aiding Noah in his fight.
The restaurant is also giving a free spaghetti coupon to everyone who comes to the restaurant during the fundraiser.
Noah is also a hockey fan, and a RiverKings player will be attendance at the fundraiser, along with team mascot Sheldon showing their support for Noah and his family.
The RiverKings invite fans and the community out to this fundraiser for Noah at Fazoli's (215 East Goodman Road, Southaven, MS 38671) on Monday, Nov. 28 from 5 to 8 p.m.
