Augusta RiverHawks News Release

The Augusta RiverHawks could not seem to shake the Pensacola Ice Flyers through two periods Friday night at the James Brown Arena, but they were able to break through with a big third, allowing them the 6-3 victory. The two teams traded goals throughout the first forty minutes as the RiverHawks were unable to get more than a one-goal advantage over the Ice Flyers. However, goaltender Jon Olthuis shut the door on Flyers in the third period while the RiverHawks added two of their own to give them the three-goal victory.

The first period was a back-and-forth affair with the two teams swapping goals throughout. Branden Kosolofsky provided his team with an early lead that was negated five minutes later by Matthew Robertson. The RiverHawks needed less than a minute to regain the lead when Captain Matt Auffrey fired in his second goal in as many nights, but before the end of the period Tyler Soehner tallied on the 4-on-3 power play for the Ice Flyers.

The back-and-forth nature of the game continued into the second period. RiverHawks' forward Chris Doyle was the beneficiary of a fortuitous bounce on a Jim Gehring shot, as he rifled the rebound just under the cross-bar to give the RiverHawks the one-goal lead. Three minutes later the Flyers would tie the game again as Andrew Harrisson would fire one home, but Doyle would regain the lead for his club with his second goal of the game.

The game became a bit sloppier in the third period as neither team was able to take over the game offensively through the first ten minutes. The best opportunities were off the sticks of the Ice Flyers, but Olthuis made a number of big saves to maintain the one-goal lead. The RiverHawks rewarded his efforts with just over six minutes to go in the game as forward Aaron McGill forced a turnover deep in the Flyers' end and sent a pass to the crease where Dustin Cloutier slid it past the Flyers' netminder.

The victory nudges the RiverHawks' record to 10-2-1, tops in the SPHL. Auffrey enjoyed a breakout offensive game with three points, while Doyle, McGill, Labelle, and Gehring each had a pair. Olthuis made 22 saves for his second win in as many starts for the RiverHawks.

The RiverHawks play on the road Saturday night in Biloxi, MS as they faceoff against the Surge. Fans can catch all of the action at the RiverHawks' Official Watch Party at Somewhere in Augusta. The RiverHawks are back in action on Phoenix Refrigeration Ice at the James Brown Arena Thursday, December 1st as they play the rival Knoxville Ice Bears. It is another "Pucks, Bucks, and Brews" night as drafts are just a dollar. The puck drops at 7:35pm. Tickets for the game are available through the RiverHawks' office and the James Brown Arena box office.
