Mississippi RiverKings News Release
Fayetteville, NC - The Mississippi RiverKings took their second straight on the road as they took down the FireAntz in Fayetteville 5-2.
The FireAntz took the lead early in the game as Chris Leville split the defense and set up Chris Rebernick for a tip in goal just 4:32 seconds into the opening frame to give Fayetteville an early 1-0 lead.
Mark Magnowski netted his first of two goals with just over two minutes left to go in the second period as he put a rebound past Mike Brown to tie the game up at one a piece. Darrell Stoddard and Deven Stillar notched the assists on Magnowski's 10th goal of the season.
After a scoreless first half of the final frame, Stoddard's shot bounced off of Brown and landed right on the tape of Tibor Varga who buried the puck past the FireAntz netminder to give the RiverKings a 2-1 lead with just under nine minutes left to go in the game. The 'Kings added to their lead just three minutes later as Cameron Sault found a loose puck on the goal mouth and punched it in after Paul D'Agostino's shot fell just short of the red line.
But Fayetteville made a final charge. Josh McQuade's shot hit Darling up high and the ensuing rebound landed in the crease. Billy Reed hacked in the rebound as a swarm of 'Antz collapsed on the net and the RiverKings lead was cut to just one.
With a minute and a half left, Fayetteville pulled Mike Brown, but the RiverKings would add two empty netters and Magnowski put home his second of the game and Ken Selby netted his team leading 14th goal of the year to give the 'Kings the 5-2 win.
The win gives the RiverKings (9-15-3) 21 points as they jump the FireAntz (9-19-2) in the standings.
Scott Darling turned aside 24 of 26 en route to his sixth win of the season as he improved to 6-10-1. Mike Brown took the loss after stopping 27 of 30 and fell to 9-14-2.
The two teams square off in the finale of their weekend set Saturday night at 6:35 at the Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville.
