Augusta RiverHawks News Release
The Mississippi Surge exploded during a three-goal third period to upend the Augusta RiverHawks 4-2 Friday night in Biloxi, MS. The RiverHawks entered the third period with a one-goal lead, but the Surge scored early in the period to tie, then scored twice in the last two minutes of the game to secure the victory.
Despite the loss the RiverHawks maintain their three-point hold on first place in the Southern Professional Hockey League as the second-place Knoxville Ice Bears also lost their game on Friday night.
RiverHawks' goaltender Jon Olthuis played a strong game despite taking the loss, making 32 saves during the game. At the other end of the ice Kiefer Smiley picked up his seventh win of the season while making 21 saves.
The game started promisingly for the RiverHawks, as they scored the lone goal of the first period of play. RiverHawks' forward Egor Mironov scored on a play assisted by Captain Matt Auffrey and line mate Neil Graham just over three minutes into the period.
RiverHawks' fans still had reason to be optimistic at the end of the second period as they still had a one-goal lead. The Surge managed to tie the game almost 14 minutes into the second period, but the RiverHawks responded with a goal little over a minute later, when defenseman Jason Price blasted a one-timer by Smiley.
The third period was all Surge, as they tied the game within in the first four minutes of the period. The two teams battled back-and-forth for most of the period until the Surge broke through with two goals in the final three minutes to secure the victory.
Both Mironov and Auffrey finished the night with two points, as Mironov logged a goal and an assist, while Auffrey picked up two assists in the game.
