RiverKings Sweep Wichita with 5-3 Home Win

(Southaven, MS) -- Mississippi RiverKings defeated the Wichita Thunder 5-3 on Saturday night, February 21st at the DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven. The win was the RiverKings' fifth straight victory and kept them in first place in the CHL Northeast Division.

Mississippi goals included two from Jeff Nelson and a pair from Garrett Larson. Adam Smyth scored the other tally for the RiverKings. Nelson's second goal of the night in the second period became the game winner, his seventh of the season.

Wichita answered with goals from Chris Tarkir in the first period, and Jason Tessier and Pascal Bedard in the final frame. Both third period goals came on the power play for the Thunder.

Mississippi scored once on the power play in five tries, while Wichita went 2-for-5 with the man advantage. The RiverKings out shot the Thunder 38-31 for the contest.

Tyler Sims was the winning goaltender with a 28-save performance. John Daigneau took the loss with a 33-save effort for the Thunder.

Mississippi is now 34-14-3 and remains in first place in the Northeast Division, second in the Northern Conference. Wichita falls to 16-32-3 in the Northwest Division.

The RiverKings play Tuesday at Odessa and Friday at Oklahoma City, before hosting Colorado on Saturday night.
