New Mexico Scorpions News Release

[CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas]-Behind a 38 save performance from Kyle McNulty the Scorpions outlasted Corpus Christi 5-3 on Saturday night. The win draws New Mexico to within six points of the final playoff spot in the Southern Conference.

The Scorpions very first shot of the game ended up in the back of the net. Chris Robertson led an odd-man break with Torren Delforte. A perfect pass found Delforte's stick and the shorthanded goal made it 1-0.

Corpus Christi answered at the midway point of the opening frame. Jereme Tendler worked around the Scorpions zone and his wrist shot lit the lamp.

After a slow start to the second period the Scorps turned on the offense with three goals. Delforte scored his second goal of the contest as his shot deflected off IceRays' defensemen John Halverson stick and fluttered into the net.

Seth Leonard hustled down the ice and reached the puck to negate a would be icing call. He found Craig Macdonald in front of the net who scored though the open five-hole for his 29th goal of the season.

Late in the period the Scorpions were awarded their lone power play chance of the middle frame. Michael Beynon collected a rebound in the slot and used a wrist shot to give his team a 4-1 lead through 40 minutes.

Two power play goals in the third period gave the home town fans hope for a comeback. Justin Quenneville scored at the 2:10 mark and Ryan Bennett at 9:23 to make it a 4-3 game.

Robertson took matters into his own hands against his former team at the 14:13 mark of the final frame. He danced around a couple Corus Christi players, found room in between the circles and launched a laser beam into the net.

The busy weekend finishes Sunday afternoon in Odessa. The game begins at 3:05 p.m. Mountain Time and can be seen for free on the CHL Network.

New Mexico returns to the Santa Ana Star Center on Wednesday, February 25th against Amarillo. It is $1 soda night, so bring your friends and drink up.

On Friday March 6th the Scorpions will host the annual Lobo Club night. Special UNM themed jerseys will be worn and auctioned off following the game to benefit the Lobo Club.

Group tickets specials are available for as little as 10 people. Call the Scorpions' office at (505) 881-PUCK (7825) or visit www.scorpionshockey.com to find out more information about your professional hockey team. The Scorpions have been named the 2008 Rio Rancho Rotary Business of the Year.
