Mississippi RiverKings News Release
SOUTHAVEN, Miss. -- The Mississippi RiverKings (6-2-1) tallied two goals in the first period, but the Mississippi Surge (5-4-0) answered with a pair of goals of their own before ending the RiverKings' winning streak at four with a 3-2 shootout decision.
It was all RiverKings in the first. Matt Smyth ripped a slap shot from just outside of the center face off circle that beat a screened Mathieu Dugas blocker side to give the RiverKings a 1-0 lead just 4:24 into the game. Ten minutes later Charles Lachance redirected a Devin Mantha pass through the legs of Dugas to give the home team a 2-0 lead headed into the first intermission.
The RiverKings luck reversed in the latter portion of the second. Mark Thorburn's shot deflected off of a stick in front of Matt Krahn and found its way to the back of the net to cut the RiverKings' lead to 2-1 with under six minutes remaining in the period. But with 1:07 remaining, the Surge added a second as Jordan Peddle collected Chapen LeBlond's rebound and buried it past Krahn to tie the game at two.
After a scoreless third and overtime, the teams headed to a shootout. After a scoreless first round, the Surge broke through with Kyle Kudroch's low shot blocker side on Krahn. Matt Gordon added a second goal for the Surge in the third round and Dugas sealed the win with a save in round four to give the visitors their second straight victory.
Matt Krahn (3-0-1) stopped 33 of 35 shots against in the loss. Matthieu Dugas (5-2-0) turned away 34 of 36 in the victory.
The RiverKings hit the ice tomorrow night in Huntsville against the Havoc at 7:30 p.m. Catch all the action at the Official Away Game Watch Party Headquarters of the Mississippi RiverKings, Old Style BBQ, or listen live on 87.7 FM.
