Ice Flyers' Star Not "Good" for Rivermen

Pensacola winger Mitchell Good scored a hat trick on Thursday, while netminder Peter Di Salvo stopped 44 of 46 shots to lead the Pensacola Ice Flyers over the Peoria Rivermen, 6-2 at Carver Arena. The Ice Flyers top line of Good (3g), Joe Caveney (3a), and Paul Rodrigues (2a) each recorded a multi-point night.
The loss drops Peoria to 3-6-1-0 on the young season, despite outshooting its opponent for the eighth time this year. Nick Prockow (1g, 1a) was the only Rivermen skater with a multi-point game.
Good opened the scoring for Pensacola at 9:11 of the first period after being set up by Caveney and Rodrigues. Caveney worked his way past several Rivermen defenseman and found himself one-on-one with goaltender Eric Levine before he dished it off to Good via a backhand pass that left Levine out of position. Good then passed the puck into the open net for a 1-0 lead.
The Rivermen leveled the score moments before the end of the first period courtesy of Parker Stanfield's second of the year. At 18:07, Stanfield had his initial shot blocked by Di Salvo, but controlled the rebound and found the back of the net from the near side on his second attempt. Prockow and Cole Ruwe were credited with the helpers.
Pensacola regained the lead at 12:51 of the second period as the line of Good, Rodrigues and Caveney continued to haunt the Rivermen. After a vicious shot from Caveney forced a rebound, Good gathered the puck in front and scored into an open net to give the Ice Flyers a 2-1 advantage.
In the third, the Rivermen wasted little time equalizing the score yet again. While on a power play, defenseman Joe Schiller ripped a shot from the point that was initially saved, but the rebound came loose to the top of the crease where Prockow collected it and beat Di Salvo glove side at 1:14. The goal ended Peoria's 0-for-24 drought on the man advantage and tied Prockow for the team lead with five goals this season.
Good finalized his hat trick at 6:00 of the third to give the Ice Flyers a 3-2 lead. Surrounded by Rivermen in the near corner, Caveney grabbed a loose puck and found Good all alone in front, who went forehand to beat Levine glove side for what stood as the game-winner.
Pensacola extended its lead to 4-2 at 10:33 of the third on yet another rebound goal. After Levine turned away a shot from the right circle, John Dunbar went forehand on another shot from a sharp angle that found the back of the net for his first of the year. Adam Pawlick and Brett Lutes notched the assists.
With less than two minutes left in the contest, Pensacola added another goal through Joshua Turnball, his first of the season. At 18:24, Turnball intercepted a pass at the blue line and raced down the left side before he eventually beat Levine on the backhand to make it 5-2.
The Ice Flyers tacked on the final goal of the game at 19:10 of the third courtesy of Dunbar's second of the night. From the right side, Joe Bueltel led a 2-on-1 charge into Peoria's zone and ripped a shot off of Levine's mask that redirected right to Dunbar who cleaned it up for a 6-2 final score.
In his first home start, Levine (1-4-1) suffered the loss after stopping 36 of 42 shots he faced. Di Salvo (5-1-0) earned his league-leading fifth win of the year.
The Rivermen finished the game 1-for-4 on the power play and 1-for-1 on the penalty kill.
In addition, Carver Arena has now seen five combined hat tricks in just four games this season. Peoria's Garrett Vermeersch and Prockow both netted a three-goal night on October 26, before Leo Thomas and Todd Hosmer of the Mississippi RiverKings each recorded a hat trick on November 1.
