RiverKings Silence Thunder 8-3

(Southaven, MS ) -- Mississippi put season highs for goals in a game and goals in one period on the scoreboard enroute to an easy 8-3 victory over the Wichita Thunder on Tuesday night at the DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven. With the win, the RiverKings moved into a second place tie with Bossier-Shreveport in the Central Hockey League's Northeast Division standings, and in the process drew within seven points of idle front-runner Oklahoma City.

The RiverKings opened with a season-high five goals scored in the first period. Jeff Nelson scored two of the Mississippi goals in the outburst, and Adam Smyth, Louis Dumont, and Brad Bonello added counters enroute to a 5-0 lead at the first intermission.

In the second period, Derek Landmesser scored his first goal of the year and Dumont added another for a 7-1 lead after two periods. Chris Tarkir scored the only Wichita red-lighter.

RiverKing defenseman Andrew Lackner opened the third period with a goal on the power play, but Wichita answered with goals from Jordan Hack and Scott Rozendal to end the game and the final 8-3 score.

Mississippi was 1-for-3 on the power play for the contest, while Wichita finished the night scoreless in five man advantage opportunities.

The RiverKings outshot the Thunder 40-26 for the night, including 17 shots in the second period.
