Mississippi RiverKings News Release
(Southaven, MS) --- The Mississippi RiverKings announced today that they have released their opening night roster for the start of the 2009-2010 Central Hockey League regular season. In releasing the final roster, RiverKings Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Kevin "Killer" Kaminski announced the placing of three players on waivers, the addition of one new player, and the placing of two players on injured reserve.
The three players waived were forwards Nic Bachand, Shane Ferguson, and goaltender Matt Lopes. In addition, the RiverKings have added goaltender Tyler Sims to the roster, and have placed goaltender Kevin Beech and forward Matt Pierce on the 14-day injured reserve list to start the season.
Bachand was acquired in the off-season from the Corpus Christi IceRays (CHL) to complete a trade. Nic did not score in the two pre-season games and was given 22 penalty minutes.
Ferguson came to the RiverKings after playing with the Markham Waxers of the Ontario Junior Hockey League last year. In two pre-season contests against Bossier-Shreveport last weekend, Shane did not score and was given four penalty minutes.
Lopes signed with the RiverKings after completing a collegiate career with Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota (NCAA Division III). Matt started and played in Saturday's pre-season game against the Mudbugs, allowing six goals and making 16 saves.
Kaminski added goaltender Tyler Sims back to the roster for the beginning of the season. Sims played in 14 games with the RiverKings last season, posting a 9-5-0 record with one shutout, a goals-against-average of 2.66, and a save percentage of .903.
In the Ray Miron President's Cup playoffs, Sims was 2-1 with a 2.28 GAA and a save percentage of .926. He backstopped the RiverKings in relief of Beech and helped the RiverKings to a 6-5 double-overtime victory over the Colorado Eagles in game-four of the Northern Conference, an elimination game at home for the RiverKings.
Sims started and earned the victory in game-five of the series, a 6-2 home victory, but took the loss in the series-deciding 5-2 loss to the Eagles in game six.
The RiverKings reached the 18-man limit on the roster for the start of regular season Friday night by placing Beech and forward Matt Pierce on the 14-day injured reserve list.
Season and individual game tickets remain available for another exciting season of RiverKings hockey in Southaven, beginning tomorrow night against the Tulsa Oilers at 7:05 PM. Call and reserve your season tickets now by calling the RiverKings at 662-342-1755.
