Mississippi RiverKings News Release
(Southaven, MS) --- For the second time this season, the Mississippi RiverKings went to a shootout against the defending CHL champion Texas Brahmas, and for the second time the RiverKings came away with a victory. Ryan Held's goal in the final round of the five-round shootout provided the difference in a 2-1 RiverKings victory on Tuesday night, November 3 in Southaven.
Neither team scored in a closely contested first period, but Bobby Chaumont broke through with his fourth goal of the year at 1:35 of the second period for a 1-0 Mississippi lead.
Texas took only four minutes to answer, as Grant Jacobsen netted his fifth goal of the year at 5:52 for a 1-1 tie, which became the score at the end of regulation and the overtime period.
Mississippi took a 1-0 lead in the shootout when Louis Dumont scored, but Jordan Cameron answered in the Brahmas' fifth round. That brought Held as the final shooter for the RiverKings and his play at the net sneaked past the pad of the Texas goaltender for the game-winning goal.
Texas carried the play offensively, out shooting the RiverKings by a 34-26 margin, including 16 shots in the second period and 14 more in the third. Mississippi garnered ten shots in the middle session, but was held to only four in the final twenty minutes of play.
Neither team was able to score on the power play, as the RiverKings were scoreless in seven chances and Texas was 0-for-10 for the night with the man advantage.
With the win, Mississippi is now 5-4-0 for the season and leading the Northern Conference by three points over second-place Colorado. Texas fell to 3-2-2 for the season. The RiverKings are now 3-0-0 against last year's CHL champions.
The RiverKings will travel to play at Rapid City this Friday and Saturday. Game time each night in South Dakota will be at 8:05 PM Central time. Broadcast coverage of the weekend schedule will be on Sports 56, WHBQ-AM on Friday and on 96.1 "The Pig" WIVG-FM on Saturday.
The next home game for the RiverKings will be next Tuesday, November 10 against the Tulsa Oilers at 7:05 PM. It's Non-Profit Expo Night with several non-profit organizations from around the Mid-South being recognized at one time.
