Wayne Bonney To Guest On SIRIUS Radio Today
Published on November 3, 2009 under Central Hockey League (CHL) News Release
(Tempe, Arizona) - The Central Hockey League's Supervisor of Officials, Wayne Bonney, will be a special guest today at 4:45 PM-EST (Tuesday, November 3rd) on SIRIUS Satellite Radio's Hockey Night in Canada Radio show (SIRIUS channel 97 - Sports Express). After officiating in the National Hockey League for 24 years, Bonney joined the CHL as its officiating supervisor prior to the 2003-04 season. During his career in the NHL as a referee he officiated more than 1,600 games with two of those games serving as possibly the most memorable; both occurring on this date 19 years ago.
It was November 3rd, 1990 when Bonney did the impossible by officiating two games in the same day. His original assignment was the Philadelphia-Chicago game in the Spectrum in Philadelphia; a 1:00 PM start time. Between the second and third periods he was informed that Gerry Gauthier was ill and could not work the game he was assigned later that evening in Boston between the Bruins and the Buffalo Sabres and that he (Bonney) would have to get to Boston after the Flyers game and substitute for Gauthier.
The Ottawa, Ontario native was given a police escort to the airport immediately following the Flyers-Blackhawks game and flew over to Boston where he took a cab to the Boston Gardens arriving at 6:15 PM for the 7:00 PM start time. Not surprisingly, Bonney missed his 9:00 AM flight the following morning citing exhaustion.
"I have never been that tired after a day of hockey in my life," said Bonney. "I will always remember the thrill of that interesting day and the three offside calls I missed in Boston."
This afternoon, Bonney will join Jeff Marek and Cassie-Campbell Pascal on Hockey Night in Canada Radio to discuss the historic happenings of nearly two decades ago.
