RiverKings Handed Season's First Loss by FireAntz

FAYETTEVILLE, NC -- Taylor Thompson collected a hat-trick for the FireAntz as the Mississippi RiverKings (2-1-0) took their first loss of the regular season with a 4-1 defeat against the Fayetteville FireAntz in Fayetteville on Friday night.

The RiverKings struck first 7:23 into the first period as Ryan Marcuz tallied his first goal of the year as he slid a shot from his knees past Sean Bonar to put the RiverKings ahead 1-0. Fayetteville tied the game at one on Taylor Thompson's deflection in the slot past Alex Caffi with under seven minutes left in the first before Thompson tallied his second of the night on a wrist shot to give the FireAntz a 2-1 lead going into the first intermission.

In the second, the FireAntz added to their lead. Joe Harcharik's shot found the back of the net 7:09 into the middle frame as Fayetteville extended their lead to 3-1.

The third period saw the FireAntz build their lead. Thompson completed his hat trick as he hammered a rebound to the back of the net to give Fayetteville a 4-1 lead as they handed the RiverKings their first loss of the season.

Alex Caffi (1-1-0) took the loss after stopping 21 of 24 shots against. Sean Bonar (3-0-0) picked up the victory with 23 saves on 24 shots against.

The RiverKings power play was scoreless on a pair of opportunities, while their penalty kill held Fayetteville's power play to 0-2.
