RiverKings Finish Road Trip with Loss to Rapid City

RAPID CITY, SD --- The Mississippi RiverKings were defeated by the Rapid City Rush 5-4 Tuesday night in Rapid City, Forward Matt Boyd led the RiverKings' offense with two goals, while Alexander Pechurskiy was tagged with the loss in his second Central Hockey League start.

With the loss, the RiverKings fell to 5-7-0 for the season, while Rapid City won its third straight game and has a 7-4-1 record.

Rapid City scored twice in the first period, as Les Reaney scored at 2:16 for a 1-0 lead, and Ryan Menei netted a goal with less than four minutes remaining in the period for a 2-1 lead going into the locker room after one period of play.

In between, Boyd took an errant Rapid City pass and beat Rush goalie Danny Battochio unassisted at 15:23 for a 1-1 tie.

Special teams were a factor in the second period, as Rapid City netted a pair of goals with the power play and the RiverKings scored once. The Mississippi goal came from Matt Summers, who scored at 3:00 of the second period to tie the game at 2-2.

But, Les Reaney and Colt King scored power play goals for a 4-2 lead before Boyd scored his second goal of the night with 9:23 remaining in the frame to get the RiverKings within a goal at 4-3 after two periods of action.

In the final frame, David Grimson scored the eventual game-winning goal past Pechurskiy at 6:02 for a 5-3 lead, but the RiverKings answered with Derek Landmesser netting his third goal of the year at 11:57 for the final score.

Mississippi out shot Rapid City 30-28 for the contest. Pechurskiy (1-1-0) made 23 saves and Battochio (7-2-1) stopped 26.

The Rush were 3-for-8 on the power play, the RiverKings were 1-for-8 with the extra man.
