SOUTHAVEN, Miss. - Linden Bahm scored a shorthanded goal and Donald Olivieri tallied his first career SPHL point as the Mississippi RiverKings (14-8-5) earned a point in a 3-2 shootout loss to the Louisiana IceGators (11-13-3) on Saturday night on Concorde Career College Ice at the Landers Center.
The RiverKings got the scoring started late in the first period. Just after Leo Thomas and Luke Sandler dropped the gloves after Sandler's questionable hit on Mike Grace, Donald Olivieri ripped a slap shot that deflected off of Charlie Mosey and between the legs of Brad Barone to put the RiverKings up 1-0 with under four minutes to play in the opening period. The point was Olivieri's first in the SPHL after signing with the team on Friday.
Louisiana tied the game in the second. Geordie Wudrick hammered the puck past a scrambling Garrett Sheehan with a scrum in front of the RiverKings' netminder to tie the game at one 4:21 into the second.
The teams traded quick goals in the third. With Matt Harrington in the box for slashing, Leo Thomas forced a turnover at the Louisiana blueline and found Linden Bahm on a breakaway who beat Barone to put the RiverKings back on top 2-1. But, 27 seconds later, the IceGators converted on their power play opportunity when Wudrick tallied his second goal of the night, a deflection off of a shot from the blueline, to tie the game at two.
After a scoreless overtime period, the teams headed to a shootout. After Jake Hauswirth and Wudrick scored in rounds 2 and four respectively, the RiverKings' Mosey put a wrist shot past the glove of Barone to keep the home team alive. On the next shot, Luke Sandler beat Sheehan to give the IceGators the second point as they knocked off the RiverKings 3-2.
Garrett Sheehan (1-4-4) stopped 29 of 31 shots in the loss. Brad Barone (4-5-1) picked up the victory after turning aside 35 of 37 shots against.
The RiverKings were held scoreless on eight power play opportunities, while Louisiana converted on one of three.
