Mississippi RiverKings News Release
Southaven, Miss. - The Mississippi RiverKings buried four first period goals and Scott Darling stopped all 33 shots against as the RiverKings knocked off the Louisiana IceGators 5-0 in front of 3,024 at the Landers Center.
The game started with a fight on the opening face-off as Kevin Fukala and Morgan James squared off at center ice with the RiverKings' tough guy getting the best of his counterpart in a bout that brought the hometown fans to their feet.
Deven Stillar got the 'Kings' scoring started at the 8:43 mark of the first period as he broke through the Louisiana defense and broke in all alone and beat Dan Earles to give the RiverKings the early one goal lead. Just four minutes later, Stillar struck again, this time connecting on a Mike Tuomi pass in the slot and lifted a backhander over Earles to put the 'Kings up by two.
Mark Magnowski added to the 'Kings lead later in the period, as he picked up his own rebound and backhanded a puck over the Louisiana netminder at the 17:33 mark to push the score 3-0. Matt Whitehead slipped the puck past Earles with Magnowski assisting with just four seconds left in the first period as the 'Kings took a four goal lead into the locker room after 20 minutes of play.
In the second period, Darrell Stoddard added to Dan Earles' woes as he blasted a shot from the high slot over the blocker side of the IceGators' goaltender to give the RiverKings their 5-0 final.
Scott Darling (9-13-1) picked up his first shutout of the season as he stopped all 33 shots against. Dan Earles (8-7-0) took the loss as he stopped 22 of 27 shots on goal.
The RiverKings return to the ice tomorrow night to take on the Mississippi Surge at 3:05. Great seats are still available for the Sunday matinee matchup as the RiverKings continue their push toward the SPHL playoffs.
