Mississippi RiverKings News Release
SOUTHAVEN, Miss.âIt's often said that wealth is like fertilizer: if you spread it over a wide area, you can grow many things. The Memphis RiverKings are teaming up with the Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi tonight, Nov. 6, to help grow community-service programs.
The Community Foundation will be the featured non-profit organization during the âKings Nov. 6, 7:05 p.m. game. As part of the evening, the Foundation will raise money by selling normally-priced $13 tickets for $10 and will keep a portion of the proceeds.
The Foundation will also promote their annual major fundraising event, the Crystal Ball. This black-tie party features dinner, live and silent auctions, dancing and live music, and an awards presentation to honor the philanthropic leaders of northwestern Mississippi communities. Reservations may be purchased for $125.
The Community Foundation encourages people and businesses to improve their community by making a permanent impact with endowed funds. When donors invest in their community through an endowed fund with the Community Foundation, a portion of the interest from their fund is used yearly to further the charitable causes that they choose. Meanwhile, donors' initial contributions continue to grow, ensuring that their gifts will be permanent and will continually increase in impact.
The RiverKings and their brother team, the Memphis Xplorers arenafootball2 team, have worked over the past year to help the Community Foundation bring Boys & Girls Clubs of America (B.G.C.A.) to DeSoto County.
B.G.C.A. offers more than 25 national programs in areas of education ranging from the arts and athletics to the environment and leadership development. Some of the proven benefits of membership in B.G.C.A. clubs include a sharp decrease in youth crime; an 88 percent increase in school attendance on average; and an average 15 percent increase in grade point average. Tutoring and mentoring are two main focuses of the clubs.
"We're happy to work with the RiverKings," Community Foundation Director of Community Development William Bailey said. "We're thrilled they are going to spotlight the Foundation as the ânon-profit of the night.' It's important to build good relationships and synergy among the different sectors of the area.
"Here we have a professional sports team partnering with a non-profit organization to help build up their community. They're setting a great example for other businesses. It's nice to see that an entertainment and recreational organization is embracing the serious needs of our community."
The Community Foundation helps serve the diverse interests of donors, whether that means animal protection and cruelty prevention, fostering youth theater and performance, or wellness and disease prevention in African-American communities.
"The Community Foundation will also benefit Northwest Mississippi by using gifts and donations from within our area to attract funding from outside sources," Bailey said. "Many regional and national institutions that give funds to charitable causes view a community foundation as a community's most stable vehicle for administering their funding."
