SOUTHAVEN -- The Mississippi RiverKings will team up with the Boys Scouts of America for the hockey team's home opener on Saturday, October 22 against the Pensacola Ice Flyers at the DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven.

Todd Brewer, Northwest Mississippi District Executive for the Chickasaw Council of the Boy Scouts of America, is spearheading the collaboration with a ticket fundraiser, in which Boy Scouts are selling tickets to the game to raise money for the organization.

"Most people think Boy Scouts is hunting, fishing, camping and outdoor skills," Brewer said. "What they don't realize is the end goal of Scouts is to teach our young men to be critical thinkers and use their talents to improve themselves.

"Boy Scouts instills confidence and helps young men - and now young women, too, through our Explorer program - to discover skills and talents they didn't know they had. It's an opportunity to practice leadership, think, develop people skills, inspire others.

"Scouting helps give meaning and purpose to America's history, to instill pride and heritage. It's more than just hunting and fishing and camping; it's an opportunity for a young person to develop critical thinking skills, practice leadership, and develop self-esteem. It can change a young man's life."

The Boy Scouts of America's mission is to build character, develop physical fitness, and train young people in the responsibilities of participating citizenship. For over a century, Boy Scouts has helped better society by helping provide youth with the educational activities and lifelong values they need to become future leaders. The highest rank that a Boy Scout can earn is that of Eagle Scout.

"It's been said, ‚¬ËœOnce an Eagle Scout, always an Eagle Scout,'" Brewer said. "Eagle Scouts have made their mark in every field in the business world. Interestingly, in the field of space exploration, all of the Americans who have walked on the moon were Eagle Scouts. I like to say, ‚¬ËœBoys dream of walking on the moon, but only Eagle Scouts have been there.'"

Boy Scouts are taught that they need to know good and to do good. One of the key tenants of Scouting is "duty to God." BSA believes that faith is a key element in the shaping of a child's identity. Scouting encourages youth to begin a spiritual journey through the practice of a faith tradition.

"Do a Good Turn Daily" is a core command of Scouting, which maintains that community service is key to a healthy society. Scouts recognize where the problems and needs of others are and take action to help improve them. Scouts work with neighborhoods, faith organizations and local volunteer groups to help young people learn the importance of helping others.

"Our communities need skilled leaders, critical thinkers, dedicated fathers who will teach their sons how to lovingly care for their families," Brewer said. "Boy Scouts helps to create and provide that."

Other current and ongoing Boy Scouts fundraisers and projects include Popcorn Sales, which will help pay for Boys to attend camp, buy uniforms and participate in programs, and Food Drives from November through February, from which food will be donated to the closest local food banks and provide direct service to folks in need.

"You never know when you are in the midst of a Boy Scout or Eagle Scout project, like one troop did recently in which they built a wheelchair ramp for a 9-year-old girl confined to a wheelchair, or labeling educational trails for the Audubon Society at Arkabutla Lake," Brewer said. "It's not about getting the credit for doing good. It's about learning and developing skills and giving back to the community."
