Surge Rally but Drop Season Opener

October 20, 2011 - SPHL (SPHL)
Mississippi Surge News Release

The Mississippi Surge saw a furious comeback come up just short in a 4-2 opening night loss to the Augusta Riverhawks in Augusta Thursday night.

The Surge had goals from defensemen Scott Jenks and James Isaacs and battled back from 2-0 and 3-1 deficits, and applied serious pressure to Augusta goaltender Peter Skoggard trying to get the tying goal in the wanning moments, but Augusta scored an empty net goal as time expired to preserve the RiverHawks win.

Augusta's Jesse Echternach scored the first goal of the Southern Professional Hockey League season on a power play just 2:05 into the first period. The RiverHawks stretched the lead to 2-0 on another power play play goal by Chris Doyle early in the secod period. Jenks got the Surge on the board with Mississippi's first goal of the season at the 4:16 mark. Augusta again took a two-goal lead when Nik Pitsikoulis scored midway through the second period.

Isaac's goal came at the 4:12 mark of the third period, as the Surge carried the play for much of the third period, battling for the equalizer. But Skoggard was able to thwart the Surge, and Chris Campanale slid the puck into the Surge empty net just in front of the final buzzer.

Augusta converted on two of four power play opportunities, while the Surge was unable to cash in on any of its seven man advantages. Mississippi continues its three-game season opening road trip at Knoxville on Friday at 6:35 p.m. The game can be seen at the Biloxi Beach Hooters restaurant.
