Riverhounds to Sod Baseball Diamond for Crew Match

June 10, 2006 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC News Release

Washington, Pa - When the Columbus Crew (4-4-2) of Major League Soccer visits Falconi Field on August 8th to meet the Riverhounds FC (1-1-4) in an exhibition match, both teams will be playing on a "new field."

The Riverhounds will have 9,000 square feet of one inch thick Kentucky Bluegrass installed over the clay of the baseball diamond to create a more traditional soccer field for the match.

"It's a big undertaking," said John Swiatek, managing partner of the Riverhounds FC organization. "We think it will make the match more special for the players and for the fans. We're all looking forward to seeing the sod on the field."

At the conclusion of the match, the sod will be removed and the HOUNDS® will donate the rolls of grass to an area youth soccer organization.

"This creates a win-win situation," said Swiatek. "We need the sod for this particular match. The youth soccer organization would like to have it for their games, but it would take them an inordinate amount of time to raise the funds for it. So with this scenario, everyone wins!"

The harvested sod will be delivered to Falconi Field on August 8th and installed by 5:00 p.m. in time for the match. It will be removed on August 9th.

The Riverhounds will complete their regular season matches at Falconi Field for the 2006 in July. The exhibition match comes two days before the conclusion of the Riverhounds' regular season concludes in Cincinnati on August 12.

Tickets for the Crew match are available at the Falconi Field Box Office.
