ROCKFORD, Ill. â Two Rockford RiverHawks who have been around since the start led the RiverHawks to a win in the final regular-season game at Marinelli Field.
Josh Tomsu picked up his team-record 10th win and second baseman Ben Fjelland homered as the RiverHawks beat Gateway, 9-2, in front of 5,732. The RiverHawks move into a new stadium in Loves Park in 2005.
The two teams will meet again in the first round of next week's Frontier League playoffs. Home-field advantage in the best-of-five series will go to the division winner. First-place Rockford dropped its magic number to two with the win.
The RiverHawks jumped out in front with three runs in the first inning, two in the second and two in the third. Olmo Rosario keyed the first inning with a RBI triple. Fjelland added a RBI single later in the inning.
Fjelland blew the game open with a two-run homer to left off Gateway starter and loser Scott Patterson< (11-2) in the third inning. Fjelland was 2-for-4 with four RBI.
Tomsu (10-3) struck out the side in the fourth inning and went five innings for the win. He broke the single-season record of nine victories set by Jason Shelley and Bryan Batthauer in 2002.
The RiverHawks close the regular season with three games at Mid-Missouri, beginning at 7:05 p.m. Saturday.
FAN FRENZY: The RiverHawks welcomed their 100,000th fan of the season before Friday's game. Sharon Schultz of Rockford entered the ballpark at 6:24 p.m. She won two round-trip tickets anywhere Trans Meridian Airlines flies.
