CHARLESTON, SC -- Designated hitter Cody Ehlers continued his torrid pace and pitcher Jeff Marquez threw seven solid innings as the Charleston RiverDogs topped the Greenville Bombers, 6-2, in South Atlantic League action Monday night in front of 5,192 at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
With the victory, the first place RiverDogs (12-6) swept the four-game series with the Bombers (8-9). The 5,192 fans in attendance was the largest crowd of the 2005 season.
For the evening, Ehlers went 2-for-3, walked once and had three runs batted in giving him 12 RBI in the series. He was 6-for-12 (.500) over the four games.
Marquez won for the first time this season as he pitched seven complete innings, allowed only four hits and no earned runs. He struck out five, walked three and threw 11 ground outs as he improved his seasonal record to 1-3. Carlos Rosario tossed the final two frames and allowed only one hit but did not earn a save.
Charleston struck first in the initial inning when Ehlers singled through the right side to score Tim Battle, who walked and promptly stole second base. The RiverDogs added another run in the second inning when right fielder Jonathan Poterson singled home Estee Harris who doubled to open the frame.
The RiverDogs placed another run on the board in their half of the fifth inning when second baseman Justin Christian slammed his second home run of the season, a two-out bomb to left center.
In the top half of the sixth inning, the Bombers threatened with runners on first and third base and two outs. Third baseman Andrew Pinckney pounded a Marquez pitch to the deepest part of center field only to be caught by Tim Battle who secured it with an impressive over-the-shoulder catch.
Greenville put their lone scores of the evening on the board in the seventh inning with the help of two consecutive Charleston errors, a Tony Granadillo RBI single to center, and a bases-loaded walk to Matt Van Der Bosch.
Charleston added three runs in the seventh on a Greenville fielding error, two consecutive hit by pitches, and a two RBI single to center by Ehlers.
The RiverDogs take to the road Tuesday through Friday nights, playing four games at Augusta. Charleston's starter will be Philip Hughes (0-1) while Osiris Matos (0-0) gets the nod for the Greenjackets.
