Charleston RiverDogs News Release

CHARLESTON, SC -Charleston scored three runs in the second inning and three pitchers combined on a four-hitter as the RiverDogs held on for a 3-1 victory over the Savannah Sand Gnats in South Atlantic League action in front of 5,021 fans Friday night at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

Charleston starting pitcher Wilkins Arias (3-3) scattered Savannah's four hits and his relief corps didn't permit one to lead the RiverDogs to their second straight win. With the victory, Charleston improves to 31-30 on the season while Savannah drops to 24-37.

In the RiverDogs' second, C.J. Henry drew a one-out walk and scored one batter later on Eduardo Nunez' first triple of the season.

Nunez then scored when the next batter, Tim Battle, singled to left. After an Irwil Rojas single, Battle scored on Mario Holmann's RBI single through the right side. Savannah pitching shut the door for the remainder of the game.

Savannah's lone tally came on an unearned run in the third when Dee Brown singled to left, stole second and moved to third on a passed ball. On that passed ball, Rojas, the Charleston catcher, threw to third baseman Marcos Vechionacci who couldn't handle the throw which allowed Brown to score.

In going seven complete innings, the longest outing for a Charleston pitcher this season, Arias allowed struck out four and did not walk a batter.

Steve Schroer pitched a near-perfect eighth inning as he fanned two of the four batters he faced, while new closer Eric Wordekemper, who earned his second save in as many nights, struck out two of the three batters he faced in the ninth frame.

Savannah starter Carlos Martinez, who pitched six complete innings, suffered the loss which dropped his record to 2-3. He allowed all three runs on six hits, walked a pair and struck out four RiverDogs.

Rojas collected two of the RiverDogs' seven hits while no Sand Gant recorded more than one hit.

The second contest of this three-game series is set for 7:05 p.m. Saturday with southpaw Zach Kroenke (4-2, 3.96 ERA) pitching for Charleston while Savannah sends lefty John Lannan (2-3, 5.13 ERA) to the mound.

The 7th Annual "Kindness Beats Blindness" Auction, with proceeds going to the Medical University of South Carolina's Storm Eye Institute, will be held. Also, the first 1,000 fans will receive a free Bill Murray bobblehead.
