Lake County Captains News Release
(Eastlake, OH)--Lakewood BlueClaws lefty Matt Maloney was already the pride of Huron, Ohio. Friday night, he set his sights on the entire state.
Maloney, a third-round selection by the Phillies last year out of the University of Mississippi, held the Captains to one hit over 7 2/3 innings, and earned his sixth win of the year, 3-0 over the Lake County Captains at Classic Park.
A native of Huron, near Sandusky, the 22-year0old Maloney gave up a lead-off hit to Niuman Romero in the first inning, and then yielded only two walks and a hit-batter thereafter. After hitting Chris Gimenez with a pitch with one out in the second, he retired a stunning 17 batters in a row.
Maloney seemed to tire in the eighth, walking two with two out. He gave way to righthander Andy Barb, who finished the final four outs to complete the ninth whitewash of the year for the BlueClaws (31-29).
The Captains (26-35) were held to one hit in a game for the second time this season.
The BlueClaws scored a run in the first inning against Captains starter Carlton Smith (1-3). Greg Golson walked, stole second, took third on a fielder's choice, and scored on John Urick's sacrifice fly.
Clay Harris homered off Smith in the sixth to make it 2-0. Harris also drove in a run with a single in the eighth off Mike Finocchi.
Smith pitched well in the losing effort, going six innings and allowing just two runs. It is the second time this season he has suffered a hard-luch loss against Lakewood. He lost a 1-0 decision against the BlueClaws on April 30th.
The Captains and BlueClaws will play game two of the series on Saturday night at 7:05. Frank Herrmann will start for Lake County. The first 2,000 fans through the gates receive a souvenir bopster of former Captains outfielder Brad Snyder, courtesy of National City Bank. For tickets call 440-954-WINS.
