
Power Tally Five in Eighth; Knock off \'Dads 9-8

The West Virginia Power tallied five runs against Hickory Crawdad relievers Jean Garavito and Matt Swanson and scored the game winning run on an error in the bottom of the eighth inning in a 9-8 decision in front of 3,656 fans over three hours and thirty-four minutes Friday night at L.P. Frans Stadium.
The game winning run for West Virginia scored on catcher Angel Salome's single to left field that got by Crawdad outfielder Jason Delaney. Power RF Lorenzo Cain scored from first base on the play to cap a five run frame.
After coming in and pitching a perfect seventh inning, Garavito had an 8-4 lead entering the eighth. West Virginia 1B Ned Yost led off with a triple. Power DH Tony Festa followed with an RBI double and 2B Mike Bell drew a walk. After a strikeout, SS Scotty McKnight doubled in two runs and CF Darren Ford followed by doubling in the tying run. Swanson relieved Garavito and walked Cain before giving up the single that scored the game winning run.
Hickory took a 5-2 lead in the second inning and led most of the contest after trailing 2-0 early. The Crawdads tallied five straight hits to begin the second inning against West Virginia starter Derek Miller. Crawdad 1B Mike Carlin tripled, RF Brad Corley singled home Carlin and Delaney's RBI doubled evened the score at two. After 3B Tony Mansolino reached on an infield single, catcher Steve Lerud hit a three run homer to give the âDads a 5-2 lead.
Delaney went three for four with a run scored and one driven in. Crawdad CF Andrew McCutchen had three hits in four at bats, scoring once and driving in one. Yost tallied three hits and scored twice for West Virginia.
Patrick Ryan (2-1) pitched one scoreless inning to earn the win. Swanson (3-3) allowed one unearned run on two hits getting five outs and taking the loss. Joe Thatcher allowed one hit in two innings to earn his ninth save.
Miller allowed eight runs (seven earned) on ten hits and three and two-third innings in a no decision starting for West Virginia. Crawdad starter Joe Bauserman allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits in two and two-third innings.
Game two of the three game series is at 7pm Saturday night. Crawdad right hander Kyle Pearson faces WV righty Matt Kretzschmar.
